Leader of Government Business has expressed worry over practice where political parties’ chairman and general secretary, exert political pressure for MPs to conform in their set of rules on policy issues.
He noted that they might not even have parliamentary experience, yet they want to pull strings and ensure that MPs on their party tickets conform to the tenet that they have set.
According to Mr. Mensah-Bonsu, an open Parliament is the one that grants parliamentary freedom to its MPs and integrity of both the Majority and Minority leader.
And call for the various committees in the House to be open to the media and public, apart from the Appointment Committee that is open by the standing orders, others Government Assurance Public Account Committees which are open are not back by the standing orders, he said.
“We should not have a pick and choose situation, we should open all the committees to the media and public after all we are representative of the people so they should know what is going on”.
Mr. Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu noted that, prior information should be given to the public, so that the citizens will be able to avail themselves to what business is before Parliament, at any given time and if they want to offer some contribution they will be able to do that.
