Parliament receives nominations for approval as emergency sitting commences
President John Dramani Mahama has formally nominated three individuals for appointment as Justices of the Supreme Court of Ghana, according to a communication read in Parliament on Monday.
The Speaker of Parliament disclosed the nominations as the House commenced its five-day emergency sitting on August 24, 2026.
The nominees are:
* Justice Sophia Bernasko-Essah;
* Justice Amoako Asante; and
* Mr. Tony Forson
According to the President’s submission to Parliament, the nominations followed the constitutional processes prescribed under Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution.
The President indicated that he had first referred the nominations to the Judicial Council for consideration. Following its review, the Judicial Council advised that the nominees were suitable for appointment to the Supreme Court.
Subsequently, President Mahama consulted the Council of State by submitting the names and curricula vitae of the nominees for its consideration. By August 20, 2026, the Council of State informed the President that it had duly considered the nominations and found the nominees qualified and suitable to serve as Justices of the Supreme Court, accordingly recommending their appointments.
“Accordingly, and pursuant to Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution, I hereby submit the nominations… to Parliament for its consideration and approval for appointment as justices of the Supreme Court of Ghana,” the President’s communication stated.
The Speaker urged members to give due consideration to the nominations in accordance with constitutional mandates to enable the appointment process to be concluded in due course.
Parliament is currently in emergency session, and the nominations are expected to be referred to the appropriate committee for consideration.
