The Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has pointed out that the protection of the public purse is a constitutional mandate and moral obligation as such decisions the Parliament of Ghana makes have far reaching consequences for the Ghanaian economy.

According to him the role of parliament to strengthen and build the Ghanaian economy should be timely because it comes at a critical moment when economies around the world are fast changing and ours must navigate increasing financial ecosystem day in day out. Our citizens are demanding transparent and prudent leadership, fiscal discipline, result driven government; and for every taxpayer’s money spent, there is the need to sharpen the oversight capacity of members of parliament in the vital areas of finance and economic governance.

He made these remarks at the launch of a strategic initiative on the theme, “Building the capacity of Parliamentarians for Economic and Financial Governance”, to build the capacity of MPs with a $1,600 million funding package secured from the World Bank and the UK’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.

The Minority Leader further indicated that, to make such oversight more effective, this project speaks directly to the governance responsible for our times demand and would equip them as MPs with the knowledge and tools to that expectation.

As the people’s representative, their mandate includes regular oversight of public finances. This, they should commit themselves to becoming effective and fiscal stewards; adding that citizens should trust that when they speak about the economy it’s not with partisan reflects but with principle, clarity and a deep appreciation and the understanding of the real issues.

“Without the continues understanding of the critical development aspects on the economic governance, they, especially Minority cannot hold the government accountable and offer the informed perspective and critic that are expected of them”.

He affirmed that the economic contest we operate today demands more from parliament than ever before as it is not enough to merely understand parliamentary procedure and legislative process, procedure since these alone cannot substitute for informed knowledge.
