Builsa North Member of Parliament, James Agalga has been appointed as the new Majority Leader, succeeding Mahama Ayariga, who has been nominated for a ministerial portfolio.
The change follows President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to name Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, a role that requires him to step down as leader of government business in Parliament.
The President has also nominated Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle, to head the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology. That position has been vacant since the tragic helicopter crash of August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of two ministers and left their portfolios under caretaker management.
The full list of executive changes, submitted to Parliament for approval, includes:
New Ministerial Appointments
* Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology – Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings (MP, Klottey-Korle)
* Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs – Mahama Ayariga (Majority Leader)
Reassigned Ministers
* Ministry of Defence – Kenneth Gilbert Adjei
* Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources – Ahmed Ibrahim
The nominations were formally announced by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, in line with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
Parliament is expected to vet the nominees in the coming days, after which the new Majority Leader will formally assume his parliamentary duties.
