Deputy Roads and Highways Minister Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyinin has given assurance that the contractor on the Pokuase/Nsawam stretch is back for good and not a nine-day wonder when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee to lead his ministry to answer some questions on infractions noticed in the 2024 audited accounts of Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
Deputy chair of the Committee Davis Opoku Ansah through a public interest question wanted to know if the contractor on the site is back to stay and work on the road that has raised issues and motorist threatening demonstration.
In his response, the Deputy Minister said “I would have been surprised if this question did not come for conversation. I have the permission of my minister to apologize to motorist on that stretch of road, it is one of the hot potatoes we inherited at the ministry by the time we got to the ministry the contractor had abandoned site due to none payment of funds”.
He further told the Committee they have been working with the finance minister to ensure they get some funds to these contractors to get back to complete some of the critical projects. “Fortunately, the finance minister has been cooperative. In the past, before releases were made there have been meetings with some of these contractor’s and based on assurance, some of them agreed to go back to site. They are grateful, but others have not because of obvious reasons”, he added.
He added that the contractor has received some payment and has mobilized to site and it is their hope that before the year ends some significant improvement would be seen on the road; it’s not going to be a nine-day wonder, “he is now back to complete the project, and we pray it would be within schedule”, he emphasised.
The Mpraeso lawmaker further added that it’s good news that the deputy minister apologized on the subject matter and he believes the contractor can complete the work with or without money; “he should try to address the situation of the bad nature of the road on that stretch”.
