Chairman of the Committee on Roads and Transportation Isaac Adjei Mensah has explained that the Roads Maintenance Trust Fund Bill 2025 passed by Parliament is to add value to the previous Road Fund Act which was set up in 1997 for the maintenance of the country’s roads.
In an interview, he pointed out that the previous road fund was to ensure periodic routine maintenance and rehabilitation of our roads.
“But it’s high time we changed the maintenance culture of our roads nationwide; they are in a very bad state and maintenance has not been a priority and if you recall during the previous administration I use to talk about maintenance; it was neglected. So, under President John Mahama’s administration he has said we have to hold the bull by the horn and ensure we have good roads, – we need a sustained maintained culture” he emphasised.
Mr. Adjei Mensah further pointed out that the difference between the “big push policy” and the Road maintenance Trust Fund Bill is that whiles big push is about infrastructure of big projects mainly roads, education, hospitals among others, the trust fund is providing funds for the maintenance of our roads nationwide, be it urban roads, highways.
And the road maintenance trust fund is going to get its money from the road toll that is going to be brought back, fuel levy is seen in there and some resources are coming from vehicle license; hence it is to broaden and ensure priority is given to roads in general.
