The newly elected Member of Parliament for the Sissala East Constituency, Hon. Sulemana Alijata Gbentie has indicated that there is still a slow pace in our quest of dealing with the disparity in gender balance to promote gender issues in the country.
She explained that “women needs to be carried alongside with men in all levels of appointments, programmes and projects and stated that though there were affirmative actions in matters relating to gender issues and balance, it should be action driven and more pragmatic in terms of implementation.
Hon. Sulemana Gbentie made these claims in her maiden interview with ghanamps.gov.gh after she assumed position as the new MP for the Sissala East constituency.
She for instance mentioned that the current appointments made by President Mahama in the formation of his government has some biases as even in Ministerial appointments only three women had been named so far as against nine men.
She also observed that it was expedient as a nation in our efforts in gender issues to ostensibly focus on placing women in positions where they can solve matters that affect them directly, rather than to allow men take decisions especially in women issues.
“I want to see Ghana move in equal balance and fairness with respect to gender issues in national affairs and all aspect of life”, she added.
