Leader of Government Business, Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has confirmed that the Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP), has written to speaker Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye indicating that the Fomena Member of Parliament, Andrew Amoako is no longer a member of the party.
According to him on Friday, October 16, 2020 the speaker called to see him and he thought he was going to bring the matter up for discussion, but rather indicated that he was pondering over the letter and rather they discussed other issues.
“We were in a hurry to come to the chamber and I did not interrogate the matter to know what he meant by he was pondering over the letter; and it is all I know about the issue and that is my response. I cannot comment further. Any response should come from the Speaker and not me”.
In an interview with journalists in the House on Friday, he noted that, he has been copied in the letter but he has not seen such a letter yet as at the time he was granting the interview.
The sitting MP has filled to contest the December 7, 2020 presidential and parliamentary election as an independent candidate and per the NPP’s constitution, Article 3 (9) he forfeits being a member of the party.
In an earlier statement, the General Secretary of the NPP John Boadu cited Article 97 (1) (g) “A member of parliament shall vacate his seat in parliament if he leaves the party of which he was a member at the time of his election to parliament to join another party or seeks to remain in parliament as an independent member”.
