A former member of the Ghanaian delegation to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Clement Kofi Humado, has said the study tour to be embarked on by Ad Hoc Committee, to draw a road map for direct election of MPs would depend on the COVID-19 situation.

According to him, whether the intended study to East African Economic Community Parliament, Southern African Economic Community Parliament and the European Parliament depends on COVID-19 situation in the wake of the third wave hike.

He further noted that in India and Nepal the situation is serious, and in his opinion, the program of the study tour may be on hold for a while. “Let us see how things go this year, it is likely that at the end of year or next year that this programme can be resuscitated”.

In a telephone interview, the former Community lawmaker on the Ad Hoc Committee charged to draw a road map to ensure election of Community lawmakers noted that, the last time the Committee met was in Sierra Leon, a draft programme drawn for the year came up.

As to when the final work of the Committee would be brought up for debate at the plenary, as the Community Parliament prepares to hold its Ordinary Session  this month, he noted that, after the study visit is completed and a report written, then it would be submitted to the plenary.

“When adopted it would be sent to the ECOWAS Commission, for onwards transmission to the Authority of Heads of States so that is roughly the programme that I saw when we met in Sierra Leon”.
