The Wa Diocese of the Catholic Church has honoured the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, in recognition of his enduring legacy of leadership, wisdom, and service.
The honour was conferred during a special Eucharistic Celebration held at the Chapel of the Bishop of the Wa Diocese on January 30, 2026. Delivering the sermon, the Bishop of Wa, Most Rev. Francis Bomansaan, M.Afr., commended the Speaker for his exemplary statesmanship and deep commitment to the welfare of the underprivileged.
Bishop Bomansaan stated that both the Upper West Region and Ghana as a whole are blessed to have such a selfless servant leader and devoted Catholic serving as Speaker of Parliament.
A citation presented to Rt. Hon. Bagbin described him as “cast in the mould of a Christ-like leader,” highlighting his humility, integrity, love, and service. It further noted that in an era where truth and integrity are increasingly scarce in public life, the Speaker stands out as a beacon of honesty and moral leadership.
In his response, Rt. Hon. Bagbin expressed profound gratitude to the Church for the honour and appealed for continued prayers and spiritual guidance for the nation’s leadership.
He acknowledged the pivotal role of the Catholic Church in Ghana’s development, particularly in underprivileged regions such as the Upper West. The Speaker described the Church as a cornerstone of development in Northern Ghana, praising its contributions to education and healthcare through the establishment and management of some of the region’s leading schools and health facilities.
He encouraged the Church to continue addressing both the spiritual and material needs of the underprivileged and reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to supporting the positive initiatives of religious bodies across the country.
The ceremony concluded with special prayers led by the Bishop and a congregation of priests, invoking good health and God’s blessings upon the Speaker.
