The Ranking member on the Committee of Trade, Industry and Tourism Micheal Okyere Baafi has assured members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) that the Committee is having public hearing not to collapse their business but to understand their challenges as it is expected that traders would reduce their products in the wake of the appreciation of the cedis against the dollar and other major currencies.
Trade, Industry and Tourism Committee is holding a public hearing on issues mitigating against the impact of the cedi on prices of goods and services with the following organistions in attendance, GUTA, Association of Ghana Industries, Association of Spare Parts Dealers and Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana.
He further added in his opening remarks before the start of the public hearing that, they are convinced as a committee that GUTA is also in business, “we are here not to pass judgement but to find solutions so that we can all work in the interest of this country. It’s important to know going forward this committee’s work has shifted; it’s not going to be business as usual.
Again, the Rt. Hon Speaker has shown a lot of interest in the work of this Parliament, so that if consequential directions should be given to the Minister, the Speaker would do that on your behalf and it would help you. We are here as a committee to support you for you to grow your business and employ a lot of Ghanaians.
“If we support your business to collapse, it would ultimately go against us as a nation and that is not what we intend to do. We would help you to be in business. However, let us be considerate as I said there would be other things that would cause prices to go up, we are here to know the truth as to why you have not done what is right”.
In addition if you have issue and you think that they are not helping you to do what is right you tell us, so that we would go to the floor of Parliament and argue our case out and the Speaker with that information can give consequential directions for the Ministry to help you, he assured.
