President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) Dr. Joseph Obeng has said they are sensitive to the Ghanaian consumers and it is wrong for anyone to say they are not sensitive to the plight of the consuming Ghanaians.

According to him it’s the more reason why they have been on a lot of platforms to advocate for price reduction from their members, which is on record.

He disclosed this when the Association met in Parliament with the Committee on Trade, Industry and Tourism for a public hearing in order to find solutions to reducing prices of goods in the wake of the cedi appreciating against the dollar.

He affirmed that the business they do is not being done in isolation; it’s done with the consuming public and they call them their customers adding when they are challenged, they are also challenged.

He noted that businesses thrive on turn overs and they have to do everything for their customers to be relieved of any challenge of pricing and that would come back in effect help them succeed in their business.

“If we are unable to sell our goods, it means we are unable to service our debt so we are intertwined with our customers, the services we provide for them that makes us who we are so this is a very important subject”

Again we do not want the perception out there that the Ghanaian trader is insensitive and wicked that is not the case at all.”

Further more the fact that we are traders does not mean we are not consumers of other products, “I deal in electrical products but I consume pharmaceutical products for my health, so its important that when we talk about this, and we do not single out any particular person”.

He said because they are in a competitive market they cannot control market prices; at best they can only appeal to their members to do the needful.
