Residents of the Weija-Gbawe constituency are receiving a major boost in healthcare access this week, thanks to a large-scale free eye care initiative led by their Member of Parliament, Jerry Ahmed Shaib.
The five-day outreach, dubbed the Health Train Eyecare Project 2026, runs from March 2 to March 6 and is designed to tackle preventable blindness and make specialist treatment accessible to all.
The program offers free screening and surgeries for common but debilitating conditions like cataracts and pterygium, which are leading causes of visual impairment in the area.
Bringing Services to the Doorstep
To ensure no community is left out, the MP’s team has set up screening and treatment centres across five key locations:
· Mallam Station
· High Tension SCC
· Gbawe Gonse Down
· New Gbawe Old Taxi Rank
· Wiaboman
This mobile approach allows hundreds of residents to receive medical attention without the burden of traveling long distances.
More Than Just Eye Care
In addition to surgical interventions, the Health Train provides general medical screening and on-the-spot registration and renewal for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). This holistic approach helps residents address other health concerns while securing long-term access to healthcare coverage.
A Personal Commitment to Community Health
Speaking at one of the screening sites, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, who also serves as the Second Deputy Minority Whip, emphasized that the initiative is about removing the barriers that prevent people from seeking help.
“Good vision is essential for productivity and quality of life,” he stated. “Unfortunately, many people delay treatment because they cannot afford surgery or a specialist consultation. This programme is meant to bring that care directly to the people, removing both the financial and logistical obstacles.”
He explained that the project targets not only residents of Weija-Gbawe but also people from neighbouring communities who struggle to access specialised care.
Life-Changing Impact
Medical professionals from partner organisations are conducting detailed examinations, identifying patients for surgery, and providing medication and referrals. For many beneficiaries, the intervention is life-changing. Residents who have endured poor vision for years expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to receive treatment free of charge.
Community leaders have also praised the initiative, calling it a timely intervention that will restore sight to many and improve the overall health outlook of the constituency.
A Collaborative Effort
Hon. Shaib extended his gratitude to the Ghana Adventists Health Services (GAHS), the Columbia Union Conference – USA, and the SDA Valley View Hospital for their vital partnership in making the project a reality.
The Health Train Eyecare Project 2026 is the latest in a series of community-focused interventions by the Weija-Gbawe MP aimed at addressing the pressing needs of his constituents.
