The Member of Parliament for Krachi Nchumuru in the Oti Region, Solomon Kuyon, has launched an ambitious borehole project aimed at providing safe and clean drinking water to every community in his constituency.
The initiative, christened the “Hon. Solomon Kuyon Borehole Project,” is currently ongoing, with several boreholes already completed and handed over to beneficiary communities.
The project comprises both standard (manual) boreholes and mechanised boreholes, designed to meet the varying water needs of rural and peri-urban communities. With an estimated total value of GHS 2,000,000, each borehole costs approximately GHS 15,000, depending on its type and depth requirements.
So far, about 40 out of the 79 designated communities have benefitted from the initiative which is expected to be completed in other communities soon.
The completed boreholes are already transforming daily life for residents, particularly women and children, who traditionally spend hours in search of water from distant and sometimes unsafe sources.
During handover ceremonies performed at community levels, joyful residents expressed heartfelt appreciation to the MP.
Many offered prayers and blessings for Hon. Kuyon, praising his dedication to solving one of the most pressing challenges in the constituency
Some of the communities that have already received boreholes include; Banda Township, Mahama Akura, Nkpabri, Elendo, Nandikrom and Kalawata.
Others are Nafiba, Ndesala, Beposo, Kaliako, Worenjah, Bintim, Dakpadakpa, andZongo Macheri.
The strategically located boreholes are also intended to serve nearby smaller communities, ensuring maximum coverage and accessibility.
The lawmaker who is a second term member of the legislature has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that every community in Krachi Nchumuru has access to potable water by the end of his tenure.
He also noted that future installations may include solar-powered mechanised systems for off-grid areas to enhance sustainability and reduce operational costs.
According to data from the Ghana Statistical Service, about 37% of rural households in Ghana lack access to improved water sources, with regions like Oti particularly affected.
The ongoing water project by Hon. Kuyon is both timely and critical for local development and public health.
