The Member of Parliament for Kpandai Matthew Nyindam has assured that the declaration of support for Dr. Mahamoud Bawumi by some sixty Members of Parliament from the Minority side ahead of their primaries to elect a flagbearer by the end of January 2026 would not affect cohesion on the floor of the House.

According to him cohesion on the floor of the House is non-negotiable as they have worked together in the chamber for a long time and would still do same.

In an interview with Ghanamps.com, he noted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) wants to win power and would still work together, and he is not sure any MP on the Minority side is a happy person that they are in the Minority.

“Again, we are all adults; you cannot gauge anybody, some MPs have even started following their preferred candidates and nobody is complaining; we think it’s a matter of choice”, he emphasised.

As to whether it’s not too early to hold primaries to elect a flagbearer and the agenda is to give the John Dramami Mahama government pressure, he said, “I do not think so, we are in opposition, we want to re-organise our party, so I do not know why we would want to give the government of the day pressure”.

What we are doing is that we want to elect our flagbearer by the end of January next year, get him prepared, help him re-organise the party, focus on what we can do for Ghanaians; be a credible opposition so that by close of 2028 Ghanaians would see us as the alternative and hand over power to us, he stated.

On the heavy defeat the NPP suffered in the 2024 general elections and how far with the healing process; he noted that, it is the reason they even need time because in every internal election there would be some kind of bruises; stating that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would have theirs too.

“I have said it that it took then flagbearer John Mahama now President Mahama eight years to be able to get the favour of Ghanaians after the 2016 defeat, and he remained the face of NDC till 2024”.

He has been able to heal wounds and brought the party together and he has been able to offer alternatives. Today in NPP, we believe we should be able to give whoever would win, “I believe Dr. Bawumia the opportunity; he is going to be the flagbearer”, he needs to stabilise and heal party wounds. At the end of the day, Ghanaians would give us NPP the mandate to lead. It’s not about being too early, he said.

As to whether Dr. Bawumi has what it takes to bring the various factions that would emerge together if he wins, he responded: “I think Dr. Bawumi has what it takes if you look at the election that gave him the opportunity to lead the party in 2024 elections a lot of things happened but after the internal primaries he was able to bring everybody together”.

Even though, some negative comments were made and then opposition NDC played them back, when you say something it is difficult to bring it back that is why we are calling on everybody to be careful what they say; its internal elections – tomorrow you would follow the candidate that you might have spoken bad about.

“Dr. Bawumi stands tall, if it’s about a credible flagbearer for the 2028 presidential elections. The rest are gentlemen, they themselves even know the best person to lead the party is Dr. Mahamoud Bawumia” he added.
