Early Life
Ernest Yaw Kumi was a Ghanaian politician, legal practitioner, and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Born on December 5, 1984, in Akyem Wenchi in the Eastern Region of Ghana, Ernest rose from humble beginnings to national prominence as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Akwatia Constituency. His brief but impactful tenure in Parliament, his defiance of political and legal hurdles, and his sudden passing in July 2025 shocked the nation and cemented his legacy as a vibrant and ambitious leader.
Ernest hailed from a family deeply rooted in public service and education. His father, popularly known as “Teacher Kumi,” was a former District Chief Executive during the Rawlings administration. His grandfather, Papa Kwasi Kumi, was also a known and respected figure in the Akyem Wenchi area. Growing up in such an environment of influence and community leadership no doubt shaped Ernest’s future path in public life.
Education
He was passionate about education and pursued multiple academic qualifications. Ernest earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Ports and Shipping Administration from the Regional Maritime University in 2009. He further obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Corporate Governance from the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) in 2014. As his interest in law and governance deepened, he pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at Mountcrest University College in 2019. In 2022, he completed a Master of Science in Defence and International Politics at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College. His broad academic foundation reflected his versatility and commitment to service in both civil and security-related spheres.
Political Career
Ernest Kumi’s formal political journey began with his decision to contest the parliamentary seat for the Akwatia Constituency in the 2024 general elections. Running on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he won the election held in December 2024, securing 19,269 votes. He defeated the incumbent Member of Parliament, Henry Yiadom Boakye of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who polled 17,206 votes. His victory was celebrated by party faithful and constituents alike, symbolizing a generational shift in leadership for Akwatia.
However, Ernest’s entry into Parliament was not without controversy. In January 2025, a High Court placed an injunction on his swearing-in over unresolved legal challenges. Despite the injunction, he was sworn into office on January 7, 2025, along with other Members of Parliament. This act was seen by some as defiance of the judiciary, and it subsequently led to a contempt of court charge. In February 2025, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to appear before the court.
Legal Battle and Controversy
Amid public debate and legal battles, the case eventually reached the Supreme Court. In a landmark ruling delivered in June 2025, the Supreme Court quashed the contempt charge and overturned the bench warrant by a 4–1 majority decision. The Court affirmed Ernest Kumi’s legitimacy as a Member of Parliament and restored his full parliamentary rights. The decision was hailed as a victory for democratic representation and due process.
Parliamentary Service
In Parliament, Ernest served on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee and the House Committee. Though his time in the legislature was brief, he was known among colleagues for his sharp intellect, passion for justice, and proactive engagement on issues affecting his constituency. His speeches reflected a deep understanding of governance, law, and economic development.
Death and Legacy
Tragically, Ernest Yaw Kumi passed away on July 7, 2025, at the age of 40, after a brief illness. His death sent shockwaves across the political landscape. Tributes poured in from across the political divide, with many describing him as a promising star whose light was extinguished too soon. The Movement for Change, among other organizations, described him as a “bright light” and expressed heartfelt condolences to his family and constituents.
Ernest Kumi’s passing left a vacuum in the Akwatia Constituency and raised discussions around a possible by-election to fill the seat. But beyond the politics, his story remains one of perseverance, courage, and commitment to public service. He embodied the aspirations of many young Ghanaians who seek to combine education, professional excellence, and political engagement to transform society.
Though his time on the national stage was short-lived, Ernest Yaw Kumi’s life continues to inspire many. His legacy is that of a determined servant-leader who believed in the rule of law, pursued academic excellence, and dared to defy odds in pursuit of progress for his people.
