The Member of Parliament for the Bawku constituency, Mahama Ayariga said he is largely affected by the intermittent conflict in Bawku that results in people losing their lives; be it from the Mamprusi or the Kusasis because he is one way or the other related to them.
According to him he has never commented because of strategic reasons; and the fact that he does not comment does not mean he is not hurt – he is but for strategic reasons.
In an interview, he noted that the recent brutality in Bawku is likely to create a rift between the military and the community; and he moved in to calm the situation there because they need the military there because they themselves cannot maintain law and order.
“We have invited them there to assist us; we move in there to point out the rights of the community and call for clam. We condemned all that has happened there and added that the soldiers went too far when they went and burnt a statute”.
He questioned the motive behind the burning of the statute, saying “what has the statute got to do with this matter?” “You are soldiers; you are supposed to be neutral”;
Mr Ayariga condemned the firing into a convoy that might have angered the soldiers, but stated that “as soldiers, you look for those who fire into the convoy; the statute has done nothing to you to now go and burn the statue. You are making a political statement which is threatening the relation between you both”
Because the statute symbolizes something for the society; you are soldiers it’s a serious matter, I do not do this along the tribal line, I am related with both sides – extended family relationship same with Kusasi and I appealed to the Asantehene to expedite action in resolving the conflict in the area, he concluded.
