Former Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance Abena Osei Asare has said the protocol established by the Public Account Committee (PAC) of the eighth parliament is achieving results.
According to her in an interview with Ghanamps.com, a report brought to plenary of the House by the Auditor General (AG) shows that surcharges and the recoveries have raised money to the tune of twelve point nine billion Ghana cedis after the first public hearing of the current PAC.
“All we need is the support from all involved in the process; we need the support of stakeholders, we can retrieve monies that are supposed to come to the state and also prevent some of these happenings”, she emphasized.
Again, we are asking Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government (MDAs) to invoke the Financial Management Act and implement sanctions, and we believe it would help the technical people who have been entrusted to take care of the public purse so that they can be up and doing and do what is needful.
On the issue of her colleagues who were at the public hearing advocating for prosecution of those who embezzle funds as it came up in the case of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, she noted that they are not proposing; but are saying that let the sanctions work and this are stated in the AG report. “It is stated clearly that section 96 of the Financial Management Act should be invoked”.
“We expect some of these things to work; ones they start working like I said people would sit up and do the needful. And when all these are done we are going to send the report to the plenary for debate, and based on the recommendations we agree on, it would be sent to the MDAs”.
And we would get the assistance of the Justice Minister and Attorney General to make sure they are implemented to the latter, he added.
