Chairman of the Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, Dr. Gofred Seidu Jasaw has assured that the third meeting of the first session of the ninth Parliament of Ghana would see the presence of the Majority Members of Parliament in their numbers, and issue of quorum would be a thing of the past.
According to him the Minority side of the House is only playing politics and wanting to make political capital with this whole issue and the third meeting of the current parliament which starts in October would see major improvement in that regard.
He pointed out further that most of the time there are committee works that the MPs are committed to and the Minority knows this.
“Again, the John Mahama government is a new government that was being formed, and a lot of agencies were struggling in getting their systems to take off; and after the kind of transition we had, a lot of the Majority MPs were trying to find their feet so that, those who voted them can see them as functional, and they were all over the place trying to lobby and negotiate for projects.
So there is a good reason why you would not see the presence of a lot of MPs; we are in the eighth month, things are settling in now, there are systems in place and projects are taking off in communities; so that, the anxiety of leaving parliament going to the ministries, agencies to lobby for projects would die down a bit, for us to balance our presence in Parliament – that is on the floor and other responsibilities.”
“I am confident that when we come back in the third meeting of the first session of the ninth parliament, we would not have those difficulties, if there would be, it would be very minimal. Be it as it may be, there is also evidence that when we were needed on the floor, we were there to do the work”, he added.
As Chairman of the Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs I led the Bill on Fisheries Act; we passed the UDS bill into and Act, we worked on the Scholarship Authority, Gold Board Bill into an Act and we have done a number of bills.
Again, these required numbers to take those decisions; and we were able to get the numbers to do that. Going forward we should not over politicize the numbers on the floor; when the bell is rang most of the MPs are within parliament, so they come in. he stated.
