A member of the Committee on House of profit, Albert Tetteh Nyakotey has underscored the importance of the Committee stating that it is important to ensure professionals who are members of parliament to continue to be useful to their fields of work while still serving the state in parliament.

“We have MPs who have businesses they have grown over the years and being an MP does not mean such businesses should run to a halt; some are lawyers who go to the court and we have to make this possible”.

“What we are saying is that if you are doing anything that brings you profit or income, apart from what you get in Parliament or the Executive you need to come to the Committee for the Committee to give you permission to do that business.

So, what the committee does is to assess the time you spend on your business; if that would not affect that of the legislature or the Executive then you are given a certificate but if we have doubt, we would ask you to choose one; either you are making law or your business”.

The Yilo Krobo Member of Parliament disclosed that so far, the committee has vetted thirty MPs, the Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin and few others, adding that it is the reason that the Speaker in his wisdom has decided that Parliament sits in the afternoon”.

The idea, he said is that “if you have any other business, you do it before the House starts sitting. But the main idea is that we have colleagues who are ministers; sometimes we need things done in our constituencies, you see them before you come to start business on the floor of the House”.
