The Gaming Commission has been commended for retrieving a significant amount of money from an unpaid licence renewal fee.
The Auditor-General identified unpaid licence renewal fees totalling GHC14,029, 978, as at 31st December, 2024; and recommended that the Acting Gaming Commissioner should ensure that the head of finance should recover all outstanding bills from the operators, failing which their licenses should be revoked.
Responding to the recommendations, the Ag. Gaming Commissioner, Mr. Emmanuel Siisi Quainoo explained that the amount was reviewed downward with the Auditor-General to Nine Million Ghana Cedis.
Since then, over six million Ghana cedis has been retrieved leaving a balance of about two million Ghana cedis.
With the remaining two Million, he explained that though efforts are being made to retrieve the money, not all would be retrieved because about five of the gaming institutions are now defunct and cannot be traced.
He was however advised to write to the Attorney General for advice for action on those five to get them off their books.
Also the commissioner was directed to ensure he does not allow for licences renewal fees to accumulate any more.
Meanwhile, the Commissions investment of 5,165,755.00 with the State Insurance Company Financial Services Limited (SIC-FSL) in 2019 could not be redeemed as the company, a state owned institution suffered liquidity challenges during the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.
