Chairperson for the Local Government and Rural Development Committee, Queenstar Maame Pokuah Sawyerr has noted that there is a spirit of cooperation between Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and Members of Parliament (MPs) in working together for the growth of their respective areas.

This , she said is the signal the Committee has observed in the ongoing public hearing of Audit Report Statements of MMDAs from the Middle and Northern zones.

According to her, because of the amount of money coming to the MMDAs for the execution of their projects, MMDCEs are no longer interested in the MP’s seat; “they get more money than the MPs so the issue of MMDCEs eyeing the seats of MPs is no longer an issue” she noted in an interview on Monday after their hearing.

She further pointed out that formerly, the Assemblies struggled to get their funds, resulting in a lot of them owing; but under the new government of President John Dramani Mahama, he wants to decentralize local governance hence ensuring a significant amount of money goes to them directly for their projects.

Added to this, she noted that some of the MMDAs are able to generate huge sums of money internally, “so if our eyes are not on them, they would be tempted to ‘mis-spend’, hence there is a road map for them to let them know that if money has been given to them there is a guideline to it and they should use it for what they are supposed to use it for. So far so good”, she stated.

“The president has given more money to be used for legacy projects; since the time of Kwame Nkrumah there are a lot of projects that when other presidents come they leave them, the president said MMDCEs should ensure that what they have inherited they should finish it so you see when they came most of them have most of the legacy projects done. And with that by the end of his tenure as President, there would not be projects that have not been completed.
