Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture John Setor Dumelo has confirmed that two hundred households in each of the two hundred and seventy-five (275) constituencies would benefit from the day-old chicks policy dubbed “nkoko nkitinkiti”.
Appearing before the Public Account Committee, he explained that, this is a policy under the National Democratic Congress manifesto to be able to reduce the importation of poultry products, indicating that as a country we import over eighty-five percent of poultry that the country consumes.
“We would distribute three-million-day old chicks for us to develop interest in the poultry industry to reduce importation of poultry products to about 30 to 40 percent in the next few years. So, every constituency would be given ten thousand birds, if you break it down fifty-day old birds to a household”
He further confirmed that a lot of modalities are going into the training of the households who would receive this day old birds, to be slaughtered for the relevant agencies to buy.
“We hope that very soon we will stop the importation, and we are ensuring that the policy goes well”.
Chairperson Abena Osei-Asare questioned when the programme would start as we have two months for the year to end and when funds are not spent it gets back to the government chest.
“I don’t want to give a specific date so that I’ll be caught, but it’s going to start sometime in November 2025”, the deputy Minister stated.
