The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has revealed that a total of 700 medical doctors are to be distributed across the country.
He explained that President John Mahama has instructed that medical doctors are to be sent to every hospital across the country, including all districts, and that there should be no district without the services of a medical doctor.
The minister further said, the government in 2025 put about 13,500 nurses on payroll and spent 500 million Ghana cedis on nursing trainees’ allowances and also, another 231 million cedis allowance is going to be paid in two weeks to come.
Mr. Akandoh made these comments in Parliament when he was debating on the 2026 annual budget statement and added that funds for services provided, which used to be a problem, is now a thing of the past particularly because national health insurance has been uncapped allowing more money into the scheme.
He further added that the usual delay in paying the allows of nurses has been addressed as the current government has paid five hundred million Ghana cedis towards the allowances of nurses.
According to the Minister, it was the hope that with the creation of the six new regions, the previous government under Nana Akuffo Addo would have built regional hospitals for them, but that was not done; and the President John Mahama has directed that construction of regional hospitals should kick start in regions where they do not have regional hospitals.
“As part of the 2026 budget, we are going to start three regional hospitals, Savan Region, Oti Region and Western North Region as the private sector would be brought on board to re-tool all the hospitals in Ghana” he disclosed.
