President John Dramani Mahama has intervened to urge the immediate withdrawal of a legislative move to dismantle the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). He has called directly on the Majority Leader and Majority Chief Whip to retract their proposed Private Member’s Bill seeking to repeal the OSP Act.

This appeal follows President Mahama’s recent public endorsement of the OSP as a vital institution in Ghana’s fight against corruption, made during an engagement with the National Peace Council.

In his call for restraint, President Mahama emphasized that the OSP, a premier agency empowered to independently investigate and prosecute corruption cases, plays a critical role in promoting transparency and accountability. He argued that it is premature to abolish the office and instead urged the OSP to redouble its efforts to build public trust and tackle corruption decisively.

The bill’s proponents, the Majority Leader and Chief Whip, have cited structural challenges, perceived duplication of functions with other state bodies, and high operational costs as justifications for the repeal.

However, President Mahama and other critics counter that dismantling the OSP would significantly weaken Ghana’s anti-corruption architecture, potentially undermining the nation’s governance and accountability framework.
