Ghana’s opposition NPP Minority Caucus is set to deliver its verdict on President John Dramani Mahama’s first year in office. At a press conference today at Parliament’s Justice DF Annan Auditorium, the caucus will present its assessment under the theme of holding the government to account.

The event will be addressed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and other senior members, with the entire 82-member caucus expected to attend. They plan to detail what they view as significant policy failures and governance gaps under the NDC administration.

A central focus will be the nation’s economic challenges. The Minority is anticipated to critique the rising cost of living, exchange rate pressures, and increases in fuel and utility prices. They are also likely to question the government’s management of public debt and fiscal discipline.

Further scrutiny will be directed at delays in key infrastructure projects and social interventions. The caucus is expected to highlight concerns over youth unemployment and a perceived lack of business confidence, questioning the pace of the promised economic recovery.

On governance, the Minority is likely to accuse the government of weak oversight and the politicization of state institutions. They may also point to foreign policy shortcomings and delays in implementing flagship NDC campaign pledges.

Specific programmes under review will include the promised 24-Hour Economy policy and the establishment of a Women Development Bank. The opposition contends that the government has fallen short on these and other key reforms.

The caucus states this exercise fulfills its constitutional mandate to provide oversight and offer alternative policy perspectives for the national interest. They aim to hold the executive branch accountable for its stewardship.

Finally, the Minority is expected to use the platform to reaffirm its commitment to constructive opposition. They will outline what they deem necessary policy actions to stabilize the economy, protect livelihoods, and restore public confidence in the government’s management.
