Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has indicated his readiness to appear before the Parliamentary Privileges Committee if First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor decides to refer him over a matter of privilege raised by the Interior Minister regarding irregular recruitments into the security services.

According to Afenyo-Markin, while he doubts the Interior Minister genuinely intends to pursue that route, he is applying wisdom as a leader in his response.

“Because you and I know what we know, I am not sure you want to refer this matter to the Privileges Committee. You and I know what we know,” he stated on the floor of Parliament.

He reminded the House that they have been in the chamber long enough to know there are different approaches to resolving matters. He suggested a conclave—an executive session—and proposed suspending sitting for that purpose.

“If in the wisdom of the Majority, he should be at a conclave, he would be further fortified by his application. Let us go to conclave. But the Majority side said no,” Afenyo-Markin added.

He however acknowledged the Speaker’s discretion, noting, “If there is no need, Mr. Speaker, and as you said, let the referral be made, and there will be a public hearing—let Afenyo, who is seen as telling untruths and breaching parliamentary privileges—you have the wisdom to use your discretion. I have my good reason for saying earlier that the Minister knows what I know.”

He also drew attention to the procedural dilemma, noting that the Deputy Speaker, who also chairs the Privileges Committee, cannot refer a matter to himself.

“Bear in mind that you are the Chair of the Privileges Committee. Under normal circumstances, this matter should be referred to you. You cannot refer a matter to yourself.”

Afenyo-Markin concluded by assuring the Speaker that if a public hearing is directed, he will fully cooperate.

“I will avail myself if you direct a public hearing,” he said.
