Dr. Ernest Henry Norgbey, Chairman of the Youth and Sports Committee, has announced that close to half of the $30 million needed to support Ghana’s Black Stars for this year’s World Cup has already been raised.

Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Norgbey disclosed that his last assessment showed $12 million and 30,000 Ghana cedis had been secured—an amount he noted is nearly half of the total target.

When asked whether the committee itself would contribute to the fundraising efforts—something they are urging corporate Ghana to do—Dr. Norgbey stated that the committee intends to lead by example.

“We want the Black Stars of Ghana to bring the cup for the first time in the history of Ghana, so we will lead the charge to get funds to support them,” he said.

He added that the committee is currently in discussions regarding their own contribution, describing it as a natural first step.

“The issue is not whether we are contributing; we have spoken amongst ourselves. We know that as a committee, we will be making quite a substantial contribution towards this course. I think leading the charge—this is the first step we are taking.”

Dr. Norgbey also made a direct appeal to the private sector, urging corporate entities to support the cause.

“We are appealing to corporate Ghana through your medium. Appeal to their conscience so that they contribute towards the fund. I will continue doing this until we hit the target.”

He pushed back against expectations that the committee alone could cover a significant portion of the funds, adding: “I’m not sure you are expecting the committee to bring $2 million. Even the special prosecutor would meet us. It is not even there. That’s why we are appealing to Ghanaians.”

Call for Transparency

Other members of the committee echoed the call for accountability, urging the media to play a constructive role in ensuring transparency.

“We would like to appeal to the media houses in particular that they should cooperate with the committee, the ministry, and corporate Ghana in the sense that whatever they take from any source, they should acknowledge receipts,” a member said.

The appeal follows past concerns over unaccounted funds, with the member noting: “Because we are in a country where at one point in time, media house collectors took money meant for advertisement and other things. But along the line, they denied taking the money that the ministry said they contributed to them for that purpose.”
