The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has broken ground for the construction of a new Emergency Block at the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Hospital, a move aimed at strengthening urgent healthcare delivery in the rapidly growing constituency.
The project, situated at the facility commonly known as Akawe Hospital, is expected to significantly reduce congestion and improve the quality of emergency medical services for residents.
The planned emergency facility is designed to provide comprehensive care under one roof, featuring a 25-bed male ward, a 25-bed female ward, a recovery ward, consulting rooms, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and a dedicated ambulance bay.
The development addresses longstanding infrastructure constraints at the hospital, which serves as a primary healthcare hub for the municipality.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Mr. Shaib underscored that the initiative was a direct response to years of strain on the hospital’s existing infrastructure. “The current infrastructure has long been overwhelmed by the burden of demand.
Emergency cases have had to compete for space, attention, and resources with general ward admissions, and that is a situation that is both clinically untenable and morally unacceptable,” he said.
The MP reaffirmed his commitment to healthcare access in the constituency, highlighting his Health Train programme, which has already provided medical screenings, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registrations, and support to over 200 residents. “Health is the bedrock upon which every other aspiration is built—education, economic productivity, and social cohesion,” he added.
The new Emergency Block is expected to streamline emergency response, ease overcrowding, and improve working conditions for healthcare professionals at the facility.
During the event, Mr. Shaib also drew attention to the completed Weija-Gbawe Children’s Hospital, which is yet to be commissioned. He urged relevant authorities to take the necessary steps to make the facility operational, noting that its activation would further bolster healthcare delivery in the area.
The MP expressed gratitude to partners, stakeholders, and constituents for their support while commending hospital staff for their resilience despite operational challenges. Construction of the new emergency block is now underway.
