Ghanaian lawmaker Patrick Boamah is calling on the Foreign Minister to appear before Parliament to address concerns regarding the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa following recent xenophobic incidents.
While approximately 300 Ghanaians have been brought back home after “unfortunate incidents” in South Africa, Boamah noted that an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 Ghanaian nationals remain in the country.
“We don’t want any propaganda, misrepresentation, or any form of unconventional diplomatic means to be adopted,” Boamah said.
The lawmaker emphasized the historically strong diplomatic relationship between Ghana and South Africa, pointing to major South African investments in Ghana including MTN, Stanbic Bank, and various mining companies that have created jobs and generated revenue.
However, Boamah expressed concern over conflicting statements between the two nations’ foreign ministers.
“If you listen to some of the press conferences by the South African foreign minister, he is not accepting what our foreign minister is putting out there. So it means there’s some issue that has to be addressed,” Boamah said.
The MP raised pressing questions about the remaining evacuees, noting that over 1,500 Ghanaians registered for evacuation but only 300 have been brought home. He also questioned the fate of unregistered Ghanaians, many of whom hold top positions in South African municipalities, the defense sector, and financial institutions.
“It’s getting to over a month now. We haven’t heard from the foreign minister on this very important issue,” Boamah said, urging parliamentary leadership to invite the minister for questioning.
“We want to interrogate matters dispassionately. Diplomacy has nothing to do with propaganda and mischief.”
