The Minority in Parliament is insisting that the GH¢350 million flood relief package announced by President John Dramani Mahama must benefit all regions affected by the recent devastating floods.

At a media briefing on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin stressed that the Western, Central, Eastern and Volta Regions all suffered significant damage, and warned against concentrating resources solely on Greater Accra simply because it received the most media attention.

“We cannot allow the capital to overshadow the needs of other regions that have equally been devastated,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

Call for Detailed Breakdown

The Minority further demanded a comprehensive itemised breakdown of how the funds would be disbursed, specifying:

· A clear allocation per community
· Detailed project listings and associated contractors where applicable
· Documentary evidence of full compliance with the Financial Management Act and all procurement requirements

Oversight and Accountability Demands

The MPs also called for a clear distinction between the GH¢150 million allocated for direct relief efforts and the GH¢150 million designated for mitigation works, with regular progress updates to Parliament.

Full parliamentary oversight is being demanded to ensure transparency in how the mitigation allocation is spent.

The Minority raised concerns that an earlier taskforce established for similar purposes has yet to account for its use of public resources.

Afenyo-Markin cautioned: “Ghanaians have witnessed too many large contingency disbursements announced with fanfare but not properly accounted for. This must not be another one.”

He added: “The NDC government is known for its optics rather than doing the real work.”
