The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has condemned the shooting of a young man during a violent confrontation between military personnel and residents in Kyebi Zongo on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
The incident, which occurred in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region, involved a joint military and police team believed to be attached to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS). One young man sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Kyebi Government Hospital.
In a statement issued on Sunday, July 12, Dr. Agyemang said his office had taken note of a viral video depicting the incident and expressed deep sadness over the development.
“I am deeply saddened by this development and wish to unequivocally condemn every form of violence and brutality that endangers the lives and safety of the people of Abuakwa South,” the MP said. “While the full facts surrounding the incident are yet to be officially established, no community should have to witness such unfortunate scenes”.
Dr. Agyemang appealed to all residents, particularly the youth, to remain calm and exercise restraint while state institutions investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. He also called on security authorities to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation to establish the facts and ensure justice is served.
“As Member of Parliament, I remain committed to engaging all relevant stakeholders to ensure that peace, law and order prevail within our constituency,” he said, urging residents to “remain united, protect one another and work together in the interest of Abuakwa South”.
On behalf of the people of Abuakwa South, the MP extended heartfelt wishes for the victim’s full and speedy recovery.
According to reports, a group of youth engaged in mining activities at the site had blocked the access road to prevent security personnel from entering, alleging selective enforcement and favouritism. The circumstances leading to the shooting remain unclear. Authorities have not yet officially commented on the incident.
