The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Government Assurance Committee, Braimah Muhammad Bawah, has announced plans to organise a capacity-building workshop for committee members. The move, he said, is aimed at sharpening their skills and ensuring they effectively deliver on their mandate.

Speaking in an interview, the Ejura Sekyeredumase lawmaker noted that the committee is on track, especially when compared to its performance in the previous Parliament.

“In the eighth Parliament, we started our public hearings towards the end of the term. This time, we are more proactive,” he said.

Mr. Bawah explained that the ninth Parliament began in 2025, when President John Mahama’s government was still new and in its formative stages, with ministers also settling into their roles. He disclosed that the committee began its public hearings last month and has not yet concluded. Hearings will continue into the second meeting of the second session of the ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

The Ranking Member stressed that government operates with funds that have been released to it. He said when officials appear before Parliament and give assurances to Ghanaians, the committee will ensure those promises are kept.

“We have to ensure value for money. We must also let government officials know they cannot take Ghanaian citizens for granted—come to Parliament and say anything, address a crowd and say anything,” Mr. Bawah warned.

He added that officials must not speak carelessly. “As a government official, you don’t just open your mouth to say anything. Whatever you say must be backed by facts and a timeline to meet the assurance you’ve given. That is the essence of government—to deliver and to deliver on time.”

Looking ahead, Mr. Bawah said the committee is poised to work. With the current administration entering its second year, he noted that numerous assurances made by government officials have already been documented.

“Moving into the second meeting of the second session of the ninth Parliament, you will see a lot of action from the committee,” he promised.
