Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for the Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board (GoldBod) to be summoned before Parliament to answer questions regarding alleged procurement irregularities and financial losses.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Afenyo-Markin expressed grave concern over what he described as troubling developments at the state agency.

“Mr. Speaker, what is happening at GoldBod is a serious concern to Ghanaians,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

The Minority Leader noted that a fellow Member of Parliament had already filed questions for the GoldBod CEO to appear and explain certain transactions. He appealed to the Majority Chief Whip to ensure the CEO’s appearance before the House.

“Mr. Speaker, issues have come out in the public domain in respect of Gold Board,” he said, adding that “procurements are not transparent.”

Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about reported losses, mentioning figures of up to 7 million cedis, and emphasized that the public demands answers.

“The public wants to know,” he asserted, while also calling for accountability from the government.

The Minority Leader framed his demand within the context of the government’s stated commitment to transparency, saying: “This is a government that is saying all over that it believes in propriety and accountability.”

Afenyo-Markin also challenged the government’s record on prosecuting malfeasance, asking whether previous cases of wrongdoing had been prosecuted.

The GoldBod, established by an act of Parliament, has come under scrutiny over its procurement practices, with the Minority Leader insisting the CEO must appear to address the concerns.

“I don’t want the board to be able to be as a result of an enactment by this house,” Afenyo-Markin said, underscoring the importance of parliamentary oversight.

The Speaker acknowledged the Minority Leader’s request, noting that the prayer had been made on the floor. The matter is expected to be considered by parliamentary leadership.
