The Majority in Parliament has leveled serious allegations against the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, accusing it of mismanaging a $600 million loan meant for cocoa sector development.

Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor told Parliament that the previous administration secured the funds from the African Development Bank for cocoa farm expansion, new tree planting, farm surveying, and warehouse construction.

“The NPP government led by the then majority leader at the time and leader of government business came to Parliament to secure $600 million from the African Development Bank,” Dafeamekpor stated.

“The purpose was to expand cocoa farms, plant new trees, survey the farms, build warehouses and increase yield.”

However, the Majority Chief Whip alleged the project was never executed, resulting in a dramatic decline in cocoa production.

“It wasn’t done, Mr. Speaker. At the end of 2024 in December, our cocoa yields plummeted from 1 metric tonnes a year to 450,000 metric tonnes,” he said.

Dafeamekpor further claimed the mismanagement had severe economic consequences, including job losses throughout the cocoa supply chain.

“Jobs were not created. People lost jobs in the supply chain, a lot of businesses lost jobs. They squandered the money,” he asserted.

The allegations come as Ghana’s cocoa sector, a cornerstone of the national economy, faces significant challenges. The former NPP government has not yet responded to the claims.
