Residents around the Weija Dam are facing rising floodwaters following a dam spillage, but the MP says a government taskforce set up to tackle such disasters has been nowhere to be seen.
The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, is demanding answers over the whereabouts of the government’s ‘anti-flood taskforce’ – just one year after it was inaugurated.
“What’s happening to the anti-flood taskforce? They haven’t come around. Nobody is helping,” Shaib said.
Taskforce ‘missing in action’
The seven-member taskforce was formed to combat Ghana’s persistent flooding challenges. But according to the MP, its impact is nowhere to be felt.
“Nothing much has gone on since their formation,” he said, arguing that if the team had gone to work and overseen the dredging of major storm drains, the situation would be far better.
MP steps in with fuel offer
Shaib revealed he has been in talks with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who is currently on the ground monitoring the flooding alongside the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
However, he admitted that NADMO is under-resourced and lacks the capacity to deal with the scale of the current crisis.
“I went round about four days ago, and I had to call the MCE asking him to release the DRIP machines, especially the excavators. I was willing to fuel them so that we could dredge the drains,” Shaib explained.
Drains choked with debris
The MP said most of the drains are completely filled with debris, worsening the impact of the dam spillage.
“Most of the drains are choked. They are totally filled with debris. If those drains are dredged, all of this would have passed – to some extent,” he added.
He is now calling for massive, urgent dredging of storm drains across the affected communities.
