Parliament has approved by a consensus the nomination of Nana Oye Lithur as Minister for the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection and four other ministers-designate nominated by President Mahama.

Mrs. Lithur’s nomination and subsequent appearance at the Appointment’s Committee has sparked public outrage due to her position on gay rights.

Many had called on Parliament to reject her nomination because she has declared she would work to protect the rights of all Ghanaians including that of homosexuals.

Sources in Parliament reveal that Nana Oye Lithur was approved by majority vote after members of the Appointment Committee were divided on her approval.

The other four nominees are Kwesi Oppong Fosu, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Mrs. Oye Lithur, Minister for the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, Ministry of Education, Dr. Joe Oteng Agyei, Ministry of Environment Science and Technology, and Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Ministry of Communication.

The nominees were approved by the House but without the participation of the Minority NPP members.
