“I will change and transform the face of Nima” – East-Ayawaso MP

Mr Naser Mahama Toure, Member of Parliament (MP) for East-Ayawaso says his vision is to change and transform the face of Nima and other areas in the constituency to befit its status as the heart beat of Accra.

Outlining his programmes for the constituency in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra at the weekend, Mr Toure expressed worry about the poor sanitation in the constituency and promised to tackle it as a major problem of the constituency.

“I would mobilize resources to widen drains, cover open drains and use concrete slabs to cover some of the spaces separating houses and increase the education of good hygiene and public health.”

He noted that the constituency was lacking refuse containers thus compelling residents to dispose of garbage indiscriminately, adding “I would provide refuse containers and procure refuse tricycles for all wards in the constituency which would also create jobs for the youth in the area.”

Touching on education, Mr Toure said more classrooms were needed in the constituency and that he would continue with the educational projects that was initiated by the MP for North-Ayawaso, Dr Mustapha Ahmed to promote good atmosphere for teaching and learning.

He noted that students in the constituency needed a lot of support to further their studies in the Junior, Senior and tertiary institutions and that he would create an endowment fund to offer scholarships to needy but brilliant students.

Mr Toure also acknowledged that the creation of jobs for the youth was one of his major concerns and promise to take a serious look into that.

He appealed to opinion leaders, chiefs, religious leaders and political leaders in the constituency to commit themselves and support the transformation of the constituency.

Ablakwa commends President Mahama

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu and Deputy caretaker minister for Information Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah has commended President John Mahama for establishing the ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

President Mahama last week nominated Gender Activist Nana Oye Lithur who is currently awaiting vetting to head that ministry.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Friday, Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa described the President’s decision to introduce the new ‘Social Protection’ portfolio as a smart move as that will to a large extent ensure that issues relating to the various social interventions are well coordinated.

” We have a situation where social intervention such as LEAP, Capitation grant, free school uniforms, among others are put under different ministries making it a bit problematic” he said.

On the issue of intense lobbying by some persons for position in government, Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa bemoan that behavior adding that it puts undue pressure on the President who needs his piece of mind to work efficiently.

He said the President having been a party man and having risen through the ranks knows the human resource materials at his disposal and will choose the ones who he believes best will help him run his administration effectively

Ellembele MP nominated as Minister

The Member of Parliament for Ellembele, Emmanuel Armand Kofi Buah has been nominated by President John Mahama as the Minister designate for Energy and Petroleum.

He has been elevated to a substantive minister status as he served in the previous government as a deputy minister for Energy.
His nomination came barely forty eight hours after a group of Chiefs from the Western Region served notice in the media that they will not accept a non indegene to be appointed a minister for the speculated Oil and Gas ministry.
While his nomination may be a coincidence, others are of the view that the President has pandered to pressure from the esteemed chiefs.

He noted that about 150 students in Akwamuman Secondary students have been denied the opportunity of writing the mock examinations because they couldn’t pay the School and registration fees.

The MP added that he was touched to see the students sitting under trees while others gallivanted fearing this could affect their academic performance.

Gov’t to bridge the developmental gap – Damongo MP

Mr Adam Mutawakilu, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Damongo Constituency in the Northern Region has commended the people for voting massively for him in the December elections.

He said: “I accept the responsibility with humility and will like to commend the people of Damongo and all the constituents for the confidence they have reposed in me.”

Mr Mutawakilu who was also the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Damongo said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra on Friday that the people of the constituency voted because they understood that the future of their children had become bright with the development the MP brought to the area as DCE.

“They also understand that the challenge the modern Ghanaian society faces is too important to toy with,” he said.

Mr Mutawakilu said the constituency had been developing since its inception and that there was no single community or village which had no access to electricity. “Water is now the only problem and I will work hard to provide the constituency with water”, he added.

“As far as I am concerned, education, agriculture health and social intervention programmes will be my priority as a development facilitator; more than 50 per cent of the people in my constituency are farmers and I promise to enhance their activities with the fullest support.”

He said the NDC Government under President John Dramani Mahama will work tirelessly to bridge the developmental gap between the South and the North, adding that “The Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) is one of the developmental initiatives to bridge the gap.”

Mr Mutawakilu thanked opinion leaders, including Imams and pastors in the Damongo Constituency, for their commitment in maintaining peace during the elections and appealed to them to continue to pray for peace, unity and development.

He assured them of his commitment to develop the area, adding, “I gladly accept the mandate and hope to live up to expectation. I thank all whose efforts have contributed to this unprecedented victory.

“I hope to inspire and really represent my constituency as a member of parliament in the truest sense, with passion, humility and conviction”, the MP stated.

Don’t panic over NPP’s law suit – Mfantseman MP urges supporters

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Mfantseman, Mr Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, has urged the National Democratic Congress supporters to remain calm in spite of the challenge by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the electoral verdict.

In a statement to the press, the MP said the filing of petition in the Supreme Court by the leadership of the NPP and by Mr Stephen Asamoah-Boateng, NPP parliamentary candidate for Mfantseman at the Cape Coast High Court challenging the parliamentary results in the constituency would all be exercises in futility.

Mr Quansah said all the court cases being pursued by NPP were ploys to discredit the biometric voting system to compel the court to scrap it and that the NPP was aware that with the biometric system in place, they would not win any election outside their strong holds as no one would be able to vote in multiples.

Mr Quansah described the 2012 election as the most free, fair and transparent election ever conducted in Ghana since 1992.

On allegation that people voted in some polling stations without biometric verification, Mr Quansah wanted to know from Mr Asamoah-Boateng how he managed to know all those who voted for him (Quansah).

He said the Electoral Commission recorded 31,748 for him (Quansah) as against 29,436 for Mr Asamoah-Boateng and pointed out that the difference of 2,312 was too large a number to be challenged.

Appointment Committee to start vetting in February

Parliament’s appointment committee will start vetting of President Mahama’s new appointees in February

Members of the Committee took the decision after series of meetings. Already, the public is being served with notices to submit petitions over the appointees to assist in their work.

The participation of the minority MPs on the committee is also being questioned as some National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs wonder if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs would sit when the vetting gets underway after boycotting the inauguration of President Mahama.

A member of the Appointments Committee of parliament, Hon Samson Ahi told XYZ News that the committee is planning feverishly to have a successful sitting.

“What we are doing is just the normal processes that we go through before we start vetting the president’s nominees. Normally it takes two weeks to advertise it in the dailies; and [we will] ask the public who have anything against the nominees.”

Hon. Ahi said he is hopeful that the Committee will work devoid of partisan considerations.

Sissala East MP expresses concern with imbalances in gender equality

The newly elected Member of Parliament for the Sissala East Constituency, Hon. Sulemana Alijata Gbentie has indicated that there is still a slow pace in our quest of dealing with the disparity in gender balance to promote gender issues in the country.

She explained that “women needs to be carried alongside with men in all levels of appointments, programmes and projects and stated that though there were affirmative actions in matters relating to gender issues and balance, it should be action driven and more pragmatic in terms of implementation.

Hon. Sulemana Gbentie made these claims in her maiden interview with ghanamps.gov.gh after she assumed position as the new MP for the Sissala East constituency.

She for instance mentioned that the current appointments made by President Mahama in the formation of his government has some biases as even in Ministerial appointments only three women had been named so far as against nine men.

She also observed that it was expedient as a nation in our efforts in gender issues to ostensibly focus on placing women in positions where they can solve matters that affect them directly, rather than to allow men take decisions especially in women issues.

“I want to see Ghana move in equal balance and fairness with respect to gender issues in national affairs and all aspect of life”, she added.
