Land guards terrorize Apesika residents

Activities of landguards continue to be the bane of development to the people of Apesika in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality of the Eastern Region.

Like many other new sites in most parts of the Greater Accra Region, and other major cities in Ghana, gun-wielding thugs, continue to arrogate to themselves the right to lands and will not allow lawful owners to develop the lands or use it as an avenue to dupe people of their monies.

Not only are innocent individual landowners being chased from their lands, but the chief, the Abakomahene of Ketase, Nana Kwadwo Gyimah, who is supposed to be the custodian of the land was also not spared.

Felix Nii Ago Adjei Doku, a Ghanaian investor with some foreign partners has expressed worry he may not be able to achieve his goal following the threats from these arm wielding gangs who are not allowing anyone to work on their land and appropriated the lands to themselves.

Felix Doku who has established a basic school, from creche to the junior high level in the Samsam Community and has run it for free for the people for the past 10 years, said the new developments in the pipeline for which he has acquired the 34acres of land since 2016, if not implemented would greatly affect the socio-economic lives of the people negatively.

“My land is situated at Apesika near the new Accra Technical University at Samsam Mempehuasem, and the prospects of the area, I suspect might be the reason the litigation is happening.” The Technical University, he noted, without doubt, will lead to accelerated development of the area, so it is obvious there would be scrabbling for lands around this area, he stated.

“I have links with some catholic nuns who are coming to build schools, hospitals, and other facilities for the benefits of the people, but the current unfortunate incident paints a gloomy picture for the future.”

“I’m only trying to give back to society, particularly Ghana. I live in Austria as an artist, and write books about Africa and its culture just to project a good image of Africa, and if I decide to invest back my proceeds in my country for the greater good of our society, I think I should rather be applauded and not treated this way.”

He was also appalled that the development will drive a lot of investors away and tarnish the good image of Ghana as a preferred investment destination in West Africa.

According to Mr. Felix Doku, though the case has been reported to the police, not much has been done to stop the intrusion on the land by any of the parties involved. Instead, Alhaji Kwasi Graham who claimed to be the owner of the land, and the very person who brought in the armed thugs, has been allowed to grade the whole land destroying all pillars and ongoing developments on the land.

He indicated that Alhaji Kwasi Graham is known to have been exhibiting similar lawless behaviour, terrorizing residents in and around Fete Kakraba near Kasoa in the Gomoa East District. And with his close associate, one Borkorborkor, popularly known as ‘policeman’, they have invaded the Apesika, Samsam, and its environs and taken the peace of the area away.

Felix Doku can’t believe, the thugs are behaving like lords who are beyond reproach and assume so much power that they have no regard even for the law enforcement agencies, in this case, the police.

“The Police were here to carry out a composite search, which results in they promised to make available by January 12 this year, but while we await that report, the Alhaji Kwasi Graham guy has brought in bulldozers to destroy every pillar, and building materials on the land and the police did very little to stop him.”

He claimed to have documents, and I also have my documents but the chief doesn’t even know him, he added.

Mr. Felix Doku is thus calling on the police to stamp their authority and stop Alhaji Kwasi Graham from carrying out any activity on the disputed land pending the determination of the case. Moreso, he should be called upon to cease any destruction and move his armed wielding gangs from the place.

“If you bought a land legitimately, why would you bring about twenty armed wielding gangs to the land. Even if you have some challenges, do we not have appropriate means of resolving them, why to take the path of lawlessness and intimidation of innocent citizens? Felix queried.

He commended the Eastern Regional Land Commission, saying, “you cannot have two registrations for the same piece of land in the Eaten Region, hence they can attest to who owns the land”, he emphasized.

The Abakomahene of Ketase, Nana Kwadwo Gyimah, corroborated Mr. Felix Nii Ago Adjei Doku’s story and painted a harrowing scene in the area with the activities of the land guards.

He narrated how he was chased with weapons, and his house destroyed by the thugs, and how traumatized that has made him to the extent that he cannot step foot on the land because of the ever-presence of the thugs.

Hemang Lower Denkyira MP sets record straight on election of speaker of parliament

As names of possible New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) who are alleged not to have voted for the candidature of the former Speaker Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye popped up, MP for Hemang Lower Denkyira, Bright Wireko-Brobby has denied allegations that he was one of those who snubbed the former speaker.

According to him the rumours making round on social media should be disregarded as it has come to his attention of some videos with misleading commentary about Thursday, December 7, 2021 dawn voting in parliament for a selection of speaker of the 8th parliament.

“The video on social media seeks to paint an impression that as soon as I took the ballot paper, I went straight to put the paper in the ballot box without ticking any choice, and that I may be the source of the rejected ballot”.

Mr. Wireko-Brobby issued a statement on Friday, December 8, 2021 to set the record straight by adding that it is a fabrication, a distortion of the events that unfolded and can be considered contemptuous of parliament.

And its Standing Orders 29 (h) is categorical that the publication of false perverted, misleading, distorted, fabrication or scandalous report as books or libels reflecting on the proceedings in parliament constitute breach of privilege or contempt of parliament.

“I did not cast my vote as is narrated in the video. It could not have been true because all votes were cast and secondly, for the records, I voted for Professor Aaron Oquaye, again four different MPs can testify to this”.

He further justified his point by noting that, his voting was live on UTV, he was the last but three voters who were called and has blue attire with a white face mask in the video when he stood up from his seat. “I took a pen from Ayawaso Central MP, Henry Quartey, I then walked to go and collect my ballot paper and walk towards the podium, I slowed down and paid particular attention to the names of the two people on the ballot paper”.

“Again, I used the pen I took from my colleague to tick professor Oquaye as my choice”. He pointed out that not everyone who voted actually made use of the voting booth by going to stand in before, ticking their choice.

In addition, NDC MPs and NPP MPs like myself who had pens in our hands just went ahead to tick after picking up the ballot, and then walked up stairs to go drop it in the ballot box, as they did not have to write the names of the people on the ballot paper, all they had to do was tick, a process that took less than 5 seconds for him to do whilst he was walking up the podium.

“Professor Oquaye showed us over the last four years that he is a compassionate, loving and competent handler of the affairs of the house, and, I have strong admiration for him as the best person to steer the affairs of this parliament which is why I voted for him”, he added.

“I am still baffled anyone would want to fabricate such outright lies against me, let us not allow such lies to thrive, our party shall rise from these difficult moments, long live the parliament of Ghana and long live the New Patriotic Party”.

Dissolution of 7th Parliament: Haruna commend Oquaye for reforms

At the dissolution of the seventh Parliament of the fourth Republic of Ghana at mid-night of January 6, 2021, Tamale South Member of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu had commended Speaker of the Seventh Parliament Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye for his role in the reforms the house witnessed.

According to him, the former Speaker provided dedicated service with the intention of making the parliament strong, transparent and accountable.

“Parliamentary service is a better institution today, with a well motivated staff, thanks to the revision of CI 118 into a new pay policy and efforts by you and the board to get a dedicate pension scheme”.

He however pointed out that parliament as an institution has lived to some of the calling, but not all the callings and it is a forum for debate where the right and wrong are debated and should not be based on partisanship.

And hoped going forward, Parliament can reflect the whishes and aspiration of the Ghanaian people and wanting to serve them well. He was however quick to point out that when the Akufo-Addo government took over it promised one million dollars for each constituency but, “my constituency has not received it, apart from a borehole and a toilet facility”.

Mr. Iddrisu thanked the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu and Second Deputy Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin for their support to the Speaker to ensure that a lot of bills were passed by the Seventh Parliament.

Again, we witnessed the huge size of the Akufo-Addo led government and I look forward to him downsizing the number of Ministers. Over one hundred and twenty-five Ministers should be a thing of the past that has some financial implications on the public purse, he expressed.

“Mr. Speaker, the people of Ghana voted in the 2020 elections to indicate that they are not happy with the polarization of our country’s excessive partisanship, they want to see a country which shares it opportunity and benefit together.”

Parliament needs a new and revised standing orders, my colleague “Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu disagreed in the method of adopting it after extensive work, and what I am comfortable with is that my colleagues cannot bully me with numbers 137 and 137”.

He said with this, he pray and looks forward to Ghana which does not have different set of rules for ‘NDC and NPP’, but the rule of law which is accepted and upheld at all times.

As first time MPs, we were met with a good baptism—Akwasi Acquah

Ghana’s Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic was sworn in with a lot of drama and uncertainty, and Ghanamps.com interaction with most of the first time Members of Parliament had varied view of the start of the current Parliament.

The Akim Oda lawmaker, Alexandra Akwasi Acquah in an interview noted that as first time MP he has been met with a good baptism and has come to realise that it is not child’s play in Parliament most especially when their constituents are looking up to them.

“I had made a lot of promises to my constituents and I have said every disbursement of state resources would be done within the corridors of Parliament, so I am going to use my position to lobby and ensure that very good laws are made to enhance the livelihood of my constituents”.

Again, we have interesting times ahead of us and added that once his side has accepted to let go the Speakership to their colleagues in the NDC, it becomes pivotal that they are ready to play ball to ensure that they get the best for Ghanaians.

On the issue of which of the two caucuses form the Majority side of the House, he noted that with the communications from the Electoral Commission to Parliament, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is definitely forming the Majority now that Parliament has duly been constituted.

“Our numbers would allow us to sit at the right hand side of the Speaker, we relax and decided to be at the left hand side of the speaker the first day because we thought we were going to fast truck issues”, he said in an interview.

Haruna urged political parties to protect experience MPs

Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu has urged the two dominant political parties in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to do everything within their means to protect experienced and hardworking MPs.

According to him it was sad that some of his colleagues who are dedicated to workings in the House and the seventh Parliament like Wa West MP, Joseph Yieleh Chireh and Tamale Central MP, Inusah Abdulai B. Fuseini who he consulted on legal matters would not be in the next Parliament.

On the New Patriotic Party side too, there are experienced and hardworking lawmakers who would not be joining us in the 8th Parliament; “it should be a wakeup call for the political parties”, he stated.

He made this remarks on mid-night of December 6, 2021 prior to the dissolution of the seventh Parliament.

Touching on the economy, Mr. Iddrisu pointed out that the economy is in recession but government is not prepared to talk about it. It is quite on it as the Ghanaian economy is struggling, with the spending of twenty-seven billion Ghana cedis into debt servicing, “the only excuse is COVID-19 pandemic”.

He further pointed out that the seventh Parliament passed important legislations like the Special Prosecutor law, law on vigilantism but in the 2020 elections there were people perpetuating violence and it was not enough to pass laws, they need to be activated.

“We have not done enough to punish corruption in Ghana, both political and public servants should be punished”.
