Nana Akomea: Prez Mills market visits is cheap populist act

The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Akomea, has described President Mills visit to three markets in Accra on Tuesday as a populist act to score cheap political points.

President Mills paid a working visit to the Mallam Atta, Nima and Maamobi markets to learn at first hand some of the challenges encountered by the market women in the course of doing the work.

He promised to ensure that the Mayor Alfred Vanderpuije liases with the Ministry of Local Government to improve the condition at the various major markets in Accra, which will be part of a major rehabilitation exercise of markets across the country.

But speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem programme on Wednesday, Nana Akomea who is also the MP for Okaikoi South stated that the President’s visit is just a way of winning the sympathies of the market women as the election draws near, but said President Mills will do very little to change their conditions in the market place.

He said President Mills earlier promise in December 2010 of rehabilitating the Kotokraba market in the Central Region as parts of many projects that was expected to be done in 2011(action year) is yet to commence.

“ Not a single block has been laid at the Kotokraba market as a sign of beginning the rehabilitation of the market, if this major promise could not be fulfilled in the a whole year, why are we to believe that these three markets would be improved before December 2012’’ Nana Akomea asked?

He added that while the NPP works very hard to wrestle power from the NDC government in December it would continue to hold the government to the promises it has made to Ghanaians.

We need to file state documents electronically as a state – Ho West MP

The Member of Parliament for Ho West Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah has emphasized the need for public files and other documents to be stored electronically.

According to him this will go a long way in preserving public records for future references.

The MP’s comment comes in the wake of the accusation by Deputy Minister of Information Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa that officials of the erstwhile NPP government especially the Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani carted away all the files in his office while exiting power , an action that the deputy minister has negatively affected the prosecution of certain cases by the government.

However the former Chief of Staff has strongly rubbished the allegation saying that it should be treated with the contempt that it deserves.

Speaking on e.tv Ghana’s Breakfast TV show, Hon. Emmanuel Bedzirah stated that if the supposed important files were to be stored electronically it would have been difficult for anyone to take away such sensitive information.

He bemoaned the poor records keeping and filing of document culture in most of the state agencies especially the ministries saying this can adversely affect governance in the country.

“You visit some offices in the public sector and you see leaflets which are important documents laying on tables, even some of the documents are soiled while others are torn, this is obviously unacceptable something must be done about this immediately.

Hon. Bedzirah added that in this modern day of technological advancement Ghana cannot lag behind and continue to move about huge volumes of papers which are important state documents.
