“I did not use the Common Fund for funerals” – Domeabra-Obom MP

Mr Daoud Anum Yemoh, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Domeabra-Obom over the weekend said there was no iota of truth that he had used his Common Fund to sponsor funerals.

He appealed to his constituents to ignore such vicious and malicious allegations being leveled against him by his opponents and vote massively for him and President Mahama comes this Friday, December 7, 2012.

Mr Yemoh made the appeal when he held his last campaign rally for the December 7, 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections at Kofi Kwei, a community near Obom in the Ga West Municipality in the Greater Accra Region.

He said, “I have served you earnestly for the past eight years and after my first four-year term in Parliament I came back to account for my stewardship and you accepted me for another four-year term and this time around am asking you again to renew my mandate so that I can continue to provide you with your needs.”

He said it could not be possible for him to use the Common Fund on funerals because there are rules and regulation covering the spending of that money.

“The Common Funds goes into the coffers of the assemblies and before those monies can be released the MP must write a letter to the assembly specifying what he or she intended to use the funds for in terms of development projects,” Mr Yemoh explained.

He said it is therefore not feasible to just access the money for funerals as being propagated by my opponents, adding “even when monies are released for projects the MP does not see the physical cash.”

The MP mentioned some of the communities that have benefited from the Common Fund as Bala Gonnor which had been provided with solar lights and water saying there are now fewer communities without electricity.

Other communities that have been provided with essential amenities like electricity, water, health facilities and roads were Kofi Kwei, Dome Faase, Odum Prala, Obo Kwashie, Asuaba, Tebu, Akweiman, Nsobri and Teacher Quarters.

He said through his personal means bought a pickup vehicle for the educational inspectorate division in the constituency to enable them do their work effectively and efficiently while from the Common Fund he had sponsored 52 students to attend Accra Training College as well as 120 Junior High School children to go to the Senior High school.

Mr Yemoh said a Senior High School would soon be established in the community and that plans are far advanced for the constituency to get its own District Assembly and appealed to the people to give him the mandate to enable him implement these ideas.

Mr Pius Fiakona, Assemblyman for Kofi Kwei Electoral Area, urged the people to avoid the misinformation being peddled around by the opponents of the MP that they should vote for them and President Mahama.

He asked the electorate to troop in their numbers to the election centres to vote for President Mahama and Mr Yemoh and saying “like the chieftaincy institution, it is better to choose the chief and the linguist from the same place rather than from different factions else there would be incompatibility.”

Nii Kofi Kwei said his community has benefitted a lot from the eight years of the administration of the MP and called on the people to vote massively for him to continue his good works for the rest of the constituents saying “don’t follow your stomach to be deceived”.

We’ve no confidence in the police – Napo’s lawyer flares up

Nana Yaw Osei, the lawyer for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Manhyia, has stated emphatically that none of the numerous plots against his client’s life will be reported to the police for investigation.

During his interview with Joy FM’s Evans Mensah on Top Story Monday, Mr. Osei seemed certain making a complaint would be a waste of time because he reported several earlier clashes to the police but they have not made progress in their investigations.

For that reason, he said, “we have not reported anything to the police yet …we do not have any confidence [in them] for now”.

He claimed that Dr. Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, was the target of a Thursday attack in Ashtown but is now being investigated for his role in the incident. He reported that the police have searched “every nook and cranny” of Napo’s house, asking, “what sort of investigation is that?”

Media reports have alleged that the attack was carried out on an NDC supporter by NPP supporters accompanying Dr. Prempeh as he went door to door to campaign and meet with constituents.

Dr. Prempeh was arrested Friday in connection with the Thursday confrontation and subsequently released on bail. Meanwhile, the MP also stands accused of sending life threatening text messages to the CEO of the Food and Drugs Board, Dr. Stephen Opuni.

In one of the messages, he accused Dr. Opuni of plotting to assassinate him and of collaborating with NDC functionaries to cause chaos in Kumasi and other NPP strongholds. Dr. Opuni has denied the allegations.

But Mr. Osei insisted that, “Dr. Prempeh has reasons to believe that some people, including Dr. Opuni, plotted his assassination” about four months ago. He said that when his client first heard of the plot, he interpreted it as a political gimmick until the recent Ashtown shooting.

Asked why the MP chose to send the messages to Dr. Opuni instead of going to the police, Mr. Osei maintained that, “we will not go to the police, but as to whether we will just go to the police as a matter of compulsion, that one is not an option now.”

He added that, “there is nothing threatening about the text message[s],” that Dr. Prempeh sent to Dr. Opuni.

He also warned that, “if indeed people are still having the plans of attacking the Hon. Member of Parliament, then everybody cannot be safe because he has supporters.”

He noted that his client is moving forward with his campaign but has beefed up his security detail.
