Parliament approves 35 deputy ministers-designate

Parliament has, during an emergency sitting yesterday, approved the nomination of 35 deputy ministers designate to occupy various deputy ministerial positions in government.

The endorsement was made as per recommendations from the Report from the Appointment Committee in Parliament.

15 communities to get electricity- Nkwanta North MP

About fifteen deprived communities in the Nkwanta North Constituency in the Volta Region are set to be connected to the national grid, Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. John Bless Kwame Oti has revealed.

Among the selected communities include Tujase, Azoa, Abunyanya, Danlandi, Akura, Nyamenboa, Lakpor, Mama-Akura, Kaponwuli and Ojiri.

The rest are Kabila 1&2, Kofi-Akura, Lamina-Akura, Nabu-Akura and Tinjase border.

Hon. Kwame Oti who made this known when speaking in an interview with GhanaMPs.gov.gh further indicated that the project which is solely financed by the Government of Ghana is expected to be completed six months from its time of commencement.

The legislator however asserted that all was set for “China Water”, contractors of the said project to commence work in order to meet their deadline, adding that poles to assist extension of electricity to the various deprived communities has already been dispatched.

He therefore expressed appreciation to the Government and appealed to the contractors to expedite works on the project in order to finish on time.

In other related developments, the MP also noted that seven communities in the Constituency have each benefited from newly drilled boreholes as part of efforts to improve potable water supply in those communities.

He mentioned Tinjase, Katabine, Nabuakura, Kpaffa and Azoa among others as beneficiary communities of the project.

Freedom & indece of media, critical to nation devt – Freda Prempeh

Member of Parliament for Tano North, Hon. Freda Prempeh has emphasized the importance of the freedom of the media in the nation building exercise and urged government to improve on the country’s press freedom initiatives to enable Ghana move higher on the World Press Freedom index rankings.

According to her though Ghana’s current position of 30th out of 179 and in Africa only two countries Namibia 19th position and Cape Verde at 25th rank higher than Ghana is commendable more can be done to improve our performance.

The MP who is a trained media practitioner made the statement when she delivered a statement on the floor of Parliament to commemorate the 2013 World Press Freedom Day which falls on Friday 3rd May.

She described the recent assault on two Journalist by some soldiers at this year’s Independence Day anniversary march past as a great dent on Ghana’s reputation as regards treatment and independence of media work.

The two, from the state owned Ghanaian Times and Daily Graphic newspapers were assaulted by soldiers who thought the media personnel were over stepping their bounds, a case which sparked huge public outcry.

Hon. Freda Prempeh noted that the unfortunate incident has detracted from the country’s achievement as a nation that promotes media freedom and allows it the free space to thrive, adding that the incident happening on Independence Day was most repugnant.

She further added it was very crucial for practitioners to examine the critical role of journalist in the nation building exercise and urged the Ghana Journalist Association to encourage and ensure the highest standards of professionalism among its members.

Akim Oda Gov’t Hospital to receive facelift -MP

The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda Constituency, Hon. Quaittou Agyapong William has stated that plans are far advanced to commence a major rehabilitation works on the Akim Oda Government Hospital to improve health delivery in the area.

Hon. Quaittou Agyapong disclosed this in an interview with GhanaMPs.gov.gh and added that his recent visit to the facility revealed a host of findings and challenges facing the hospital that needed to be resolved without delay.

According to him, roof at some departments and offices including that of the recovery ward leaked very badly, further adding that the hospital’s Theater will also be upgraded to fit modern standard.

“I was very sad to know that even the roof at the recovery ward of the hospital leaks very seriously whereas the hospital’s theater also needs to be upgraded. So this tells you we have a lot to do as far as renovating the facility is concern” he asserted.

Meanwhile, the MP also noted that funds will also be raised from his own share of the MPs common fund to complete a new mechanized borehole project to ensure regular water supply to the hospital.
