Allow the rule of law to work – Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Communications, Haruna Iddrisu, has asked anti-corruption crusader, P.C. Appiah Ofori to allow all court cases on judgment debts to run its course.
The Asikuma-Odobeng-Brakwa MP has promised to lead a major crusade to block the confirmation of Mr. Kwesi Amissah-Arthur as Vice President because as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, he presided over payments of judgment debts instead of protecting the public purse.

Hon. Iddrisu, however, told Citi News it is appropriate to let cool heads prevail and allow the law to work.

He opined: “As for the campaign that Honourable P.C. Ofori has embarked upon, I think that we should all respect the rule of law. The matters are currently in court so let us wait for a decision on it instead of wanting to hold the Governor of the Bank of Ghana responsible.”

He further explained that “if you read the constitutional articles on the Consolidated Fund, the Contingency Fund and the role of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, we will know where warranting emanates from and we will know who shows respect to whatever payments are authorised.”

VEEP nominee to be vetted publicly

The Vice Presidential nominee, who is the outgoing governor of the Bank of Ghana, Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur is to be vetted publicly on Monday, 6th August by the Appointment Committee of parliament.

The decision was reached after the committee on wednesday deliberated on the process and form that the vetting exercise should take.

The issue of how the nominee is to be vetted became a subject of controversy among sections of the public and politicians.

While some were of the view that the office of the Vice President is high and as such any nominee to that office should not be vetted publicly to avoid a possible public ridicule, others were of the view that since a lot of Ghanaians barely know the would be Vice President, it was important that he is vetted publicly for Ghanaians to know him much better.

The vetting has become necessary after the Speaker of Parliament, Joyce Bamford Addo on Wednesday after receiving official communication from the President on his nomination of Mr. Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur as his Veep directed the Appointment Committee of parliament to meet and fashion out appropriate procedure to vet the nominee.
