NPP needs surgical operation to survive – Ken Agyapong

If there is any political party out there that urgently needs a surgical operation to survive, then the attention must be on the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Cntral, has revealed the NPP is sick and calling on Nana Akufo-Addo to lead the party makes their condition even worse.

The NPP firebrand in an interview with OKAY FM disclosed that there is a huge gap that needs to be bridged within the party before making incessant calls on Nana Akufo-Addo to lead the party in 2016.

Over the past weeks, news about who leads the NPP in 2016 has been rejuvenated. Certain key players in the party have called on their 2012 presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo to re assume his post though he personally stated after the Supreme Court verdict that he would like to take a back seat and reflect on his political life.

Despite this statement by their 2012 flagbearer, many are those who have turned a deaf ear on the call and still persisting he becomes the 2016 flagbearer.

But Hon. Kennedy Agyapong believes the campaign to get Nana Akufo- Addo back this early is “disgusting”.

He explains there is an imperative issue that needs to be solved before jumping the gun to select a leader for 2016.

“The issue of faction is killing the NPP, he says. Before that problem is solved, there is no way the party can make progress,” Mr. Agyapong noted.

“If you are to hear people in Nana’s camp talk about Mr. Alan Kyerematen, you would have pity on the latter and this is also the same when you hear Alan’s camp talk about Nana Addo,” he said.

He warned that until the petty scramble for power is halted and the sabotage killed, they would make no remarkable progress in future elections.

Hon. Alijata calls for elimination of FGM

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tumu in the Upper West Region, Ms Alijata Sulemana, has called for a more concerted effort by all stakeholders to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the country.

She said FGM continued to cause serious havoc to the lives of many married women, who were either losing their marriages or were experiencing stalled marriages due to their inability to meet their conjugal obligations.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a workshop held in Accra, Ms Sulemana said being a victim of FGM herself, she had been encountering many marital challenges right through child-birth as well as meeting her conjugal rights as a wife, adding that she was more prepared to openly join the campaign to eliminate the practice in Ghana.

“I even wanted to give birth to five children but had to stop at three because of the many serious complications and pains I go through during delivery,” she told the GNA.

“FGM is never a good thing, it breaks homes – the most sensitive thing that will make a woman have sexual contact with her husband is taken out during the FGM process,” the MP said.

Madam Sulemana said all efforts must, therefore, be put in place to ensure that the practice was eliminated totally from the society, adding that various educational and social awareness programmes should be embarked upon to sensitize the people on the dangers and harmful effects of FGM on women.

FGM has been described as the most dangerous and degrading surgical procedure that women and girls are made to endure in the name of tradition, which unfortunately has been on the increase in the three northern regions and the Brong Ahafo Region as well as some Zongo communities in urban centres.

The current prevalence rate of FGM in Ghana is four per cent, a UNICEF Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2011 has revealed.

In 2007, the MICS puts FGM at 3.8 per cent for women between 15 and 49 years.

The procedure of FGM is done in three various forms with the first type called clitoridectomy and involves the excision of the clitoris. The second type known as excision is where the clitoral hood, the clitoris itself and the labia minora are removed altogether.

The third known as infibulations or pharonic type involves the total removal of the clitoris, the hood, the labia minora and the labia majora so as to expose flesh for the stitching together of two sides of the vulva to cover the urethra and the entrance of the vagina.

While the first two types are widely practiced in several African countries including Ghana, Guinea, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Mali, Burkina Faso Ethiopia, Egypt and Kenya, the infibulations is practiced in few north-eastern states of Nigeria.

In some practicing communities, FGM is performed in the first two weeks after birth, before the third month; between four and ten years; during adolescence or before marriage.

Some also do it during woman’s first pregnancy and even just before women were delivered of their first babies

Mrs Afua Ansre, Representative of United Nations Women, said FGM had no medical reasons but unfortunately, 18 per cent of FGM were performed by medical doctors in some countries.

She said the practice, a deep–rooted tradition, was a human right issue against girls and women, therefore, the 2012 United Nations Resolution 67/146 on FGM entitled: “Intensifying global efforts for the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation” has come to mandate all countries to put in measures at eliminating the practices.

The Resolution urges member countries to condemn all harmful practices that affect women and girls, in particular FGM, and to take the necessary measures including enforcing legislation, advocacy, awareness raising and especially, allocating sufficient resources to the implementation of policies and programmes aimed at eliminating FGM by engaging all parts of society.

Mrs Ansre said instead of the myth that FGM prepared the woman for marriage and childbirth, it rather caused severe pain, bleeding, urinary detention and open sour that placed life time consequences on the victims, thereby increasing risk of childbearing complications.

Ghana’s Criminal Code Amendment Act 2007 Act 741, according to Mrs Benita Okity-Duah, Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has comprehensive provisions that deal with FGM with enhanced penalties to deal with perpetrators of the practice.

However, she said, the law needed to be implemented to the letter by all stakeholders, including the police and, especially, traditional leaders, who are the custodians of customs and traditions, to ensure that all outmoded customs are eliminated.

Intensive education and awareness creation, she added, were also needed to expose the harm FGM to womankind.

Kennedy Agyapong to contest NPP flagbearership 2016 if..

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has expressed interest to contest for the flagbearership of the party when nominations are officially opened by party executives.

Kennedy Agyapong, NPP Member of Parliament for Assin-North who spoke to HELLO FM’s king Edward Thursday said he will not miss picking forms to contest if all the agitations of Nana Addo leading the party for the 2016 elections does not cease.

He added that it is about time the party hierarchy sat down to discuss the way forward and focus on how they can win elections rather than creating unnecessary confusion in the party; looking for who leads the party in 2016.

“There are many issues that need to be solved before we push for a flagbearer. What’s important is for us to be united. There is a canker eating up the party… if you’ve gone for an election, you sit and analyze the situation – what caused the defeat and what can we do to change whatever happened? But all we are doing is lobbying for one person… while the problem remains unsolved. We need to address the problems in the party otherwise we will always be defeated,” he said.

Deputy EC Chair Is

NPP Firebrand, Kennedy Agyapong has branded the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Sulley Amadu as “dishonest” and a “crook”, hence dared to expose his ill motives.

According to him, Mr. Amadu should be penalized instead of the EC Chairman, Dr. Afari-Gyan, for being in bed with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He revealed on Asempa FM on Thursday that prior to the general elections last year; he (Mr. Amadu) birthed his ‘evil’ plans during his secret meetings with NDC members in Accra.

“The most dishonest electoral Officer you can find is Sulley. He is so dishonest and if he does not shut up, I will expose him. For him to come and insult the intelligence of Ghanaians by saying that parties should propose reforms,…who the hell does he think he is?”

He explained that “all the bad things that happened” during the elections, the Deputy EC Chairman was the “operational guide going round, meeting NDC at Shai Hills and teaching them what to do; telling electoral Officers how to dupe the elections.”

He therefore warned him to keep quiet or else he would bare his activities in broad daylight.

Also, touching on the ruling by the nine Supreme Court Justices, he stressed that the “decision of the court not finding anything wrong with the petitioners’ case is an “endorsement for rigging, beating, killing and stealing to be declared a winner and that is recipe for chaos.

President Mahama deserves recognition in Ghanaian politics-Daboya/Mankarigu MP

The Member of Parliament for Daboya/Mankarigu constituency, Baani Abudu Nelson says President John Dramani Mahama is a pride in the political arena therefore deserves more awards than what he has received in Benin.

According to him, President Mahama is worth commendation having gone through the ranks in Ghanaian politics from the grassroots to eventually peak himself in the highest office of the land.

He said this was a remarkable achievement and must be duly honoured for his commitment to our politics in the country.

Mr. Abudu Nelson’s observation comes in the wake of an award President Mahama received from the government of Benin on Monday which represents “The Great Cross of the National Order of Benin”.

The award is acclaimed as the highest in the national awards and credentials of the Republic of Benin, but interacting with Ghanamps.gov.gh on the President’s award, Mr Abudu Nelson maintained that the merits of the President’s political life is so far gratifying and unprecedented, hence ought to be recognized exclusively for his contributions.

POLITICAL LIFE

The President contested to serve as a Member of Parliament for the Bole-Bamboi Constituency in 1996, and won on the ticket of the NDC. He was re-elected to Parliament two more times in the year 2000, and 2004 prior to becoming the Vice-Presidential Candidate for the Party in 2008.

During his first term of office as an MP he was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Communications, and subsequently appointed substantive Minister. He was the first Chairman of the National Communications Authority and in that capacity played a key role in shaping Ghana’s telecommunications sector after deregulation. During the NDC Administration of 1996 -2000 he was also a member of the economic management team, and played a key role in the publicity committee for the re-introduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT).

When the NDC Government left office in January 2001 he served as the Minority Spokesman for Communications in Parliament from 2001 to 2004, the Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2008, and as a Member of the Pan African Parliament. He was also the Director of Communications of the NDC and played a key role in giving voice to the party’s positions on matters of governance and social significance when the party was in opposition.

Mr. John Mahama ascended to the Office of President after the demise of the late President, His Excellency Professor John Evans Atta Mills on 24th July 2012. This undoubtedly paved the way for his investiture in the Presidency and the as the head of state, stipulated by the 1992 Constitution Article 60 (6).

He has since then stayed on as the President of the land, as in December 07, 2012 his position was further entrenched emerging as the President-elect from the 2012 general elections.

For Mr. Abudu Nelson, President Mahama without doubt has earned a lot of credentials in politics to guarantee the vision of creating a Better Ghana, through massive development in the relevant sectors.

He further echoed that he had the potential to rationalize and transform the economy to a desirable level and make it attractive to investors.
