Aquians Quansah cautions against winning of sand at Elmina beach

A deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Aquinas Quansah, has warned against the act of sand winning along the Elmina Beach by residents and other foreigners in search of gold deposits.

According to him, the indiscriminate winning of sand at the beach if not check could have an adverse effect on the lives of residents as the sea would easily over flow its banks when there is high tidal waves.

Hundreds of gold seekers since Monday have thronged the shores of Elmina, scavenging for gold which was said to have been washed ashore the beach.

Men, women, school children, school drop-outs, fishermen and entire family units have arrived at the Elmina beach digging pit after pit in search for gold, despite a directive by the Minerals Commission asking the scavengers to desist from their illegal act.

Contributing to a panel discussion on the issue on e.tv Ghana’s Breakfast TV show, on Wednesday Nov 30, the Hon. Minister who is also the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman West, expressed worry over the increasing destruction of the beach area with several pits dug in search for gold, an act that is eventually going to destroy the environment.

He noted that digging of the sand is going to destroy the beauty of the beach which has served as a tourist attraction that has generated a lot of revenue to the state.

He said, there is the need for government to intervene and stop the ongoing practice as the hard earned tax payers monies cannot be spent to construct a new sea defense wall for the people when the sand at the beached is continually mined.

Hon. Aquinas called on all the stakeholders including the Geological Service and the Minerals Commission to verify if indeed the substance is real gold, after which a proper programme must be drawn to ensure its safe mining.

Indemnity clause must stay – Ocquaye

The second deputy speaker of Parliament and NPP MP for Dome Kwabenya, Professor Mike Ocquaye, has once again rejected suggestions for the indemnity clauses in the 1992 constitution to be removed.

The Tuesday’s edition of the Daily Graphic reported that the Constitution Review Commission has recommended the expunging of the clauses that seek to protect all coup makers from prosecution, in its report expected to be presented to President Mills on December 12.

The indemnity clauses of the 1992 Constitution have shielded coup makers in Ghana including ex-President J. J Rawlings from possible prosecution for acts and omissions committed during their reign.

The call for the removal of the indemnity clauses has sparked several debates over the years.

Though the commission is yet to speak to the report, Prof Mike Ocquaye in an interview with Citi News said it will be a wrong move to remove the indemnity clause from the 1992 constitution.

According to him, the clauses must remain, but there must be an amendment to ban the commemoration of any coup so as not to continue raking old wounds.

“You have done a coup, it is wrong, you have asked for indemnity, the good people of Ghana have graciously given it to you, then you say let me celebrate the wrong doing.

“That is the reson why people are calling for it total abolishing but I don’t agree because the principle of indemnity is good, it allows a country to put certain things behind it.”

I have no presidential ambitions – Samia Nkrumah

The Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and MP for Jomoro constituency Samia Nkrumah has debunked rumours making the rounds that she is nursing presidential ambitions.

According to the only CPP MP, there is no iota of truth in those claims indicating that “the only place I have seen it is in the papers. What is this agenda, why are people trying to bring out all these rumours about me? ”

She further said her focus is on building the structures of the CPP and her constituency where she is facing competition from the ruling NDC and the main opposition NPP.

Speaking on Citi Fm’s Eyewitness News on Monday, Samia indicated that “NDC has just conducted primaries and now there is an NDC candidate in Jomoro and an NPP candidate so once again we go to elections as we did in 2008 against an NDC candidate and an NPP candidate. ”

She also dispelled speculations that she has been in secret talks with the ruling NDC saying that “we’ve always spoken to these parties both NDC and the NPP and we are not doing any deals with them.

“Some of us are not in this business for any other reason than to uplift this country through a viable political vehicle.

“I have not aligned myself with anyone, it will not happen, it has not happened so all these false allegations are purely lies and intended to diminish the popularity and credibility of the CPP,” Samia added.

Attah Akyea claims innocence in Okyehene’s controversy

The NPP Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has claimed innocence about his allegations that he is behind accusations leveled against the Okyehene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panyin II for allegedly condoning illegal mining in the Akyem State.

According to him, it would be preposterous for anyone to accuse him of being behind the unsubstantiated allegation against the Okyehene, a man that he supported to become the King of Akyem Abuakwa.

The MP was fingered for being behind the plot to tarnish the image of Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori after some men suspected to be coming from the Okyehene’s Palace accosted the convoy in which the MP together with the Abuakwa South Constituency secretary were travelling.

Yet speaking on the Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, Mr. Akyea confirmed that a vehicle in front of his was attacked over the weekend but managed to escape unhurt from the angry youth.

He stated that he had been wrongly accused, adding that the allegations against the Okyehene are regrettable which shouldn’t be trumpeted.

Hon. Atta Akyea noted that he is a royal himself who owes allegiance to the Ofori Panyin’s stool and would not do anything to bring the name of the Okyehene and the stool into disrepute, wondering why there is a grand attempt to drug his name into the controversy.

NPP is destroying itself with unguarded statements – Adu Asare

The Member of Parliament for Adenta, Kojo Adu Asare has lashed out at the leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their unguarded pronouncements saying its leaders appear to be engaged in a match of who can spew out the most condemnable statements.

According to him, in recent times hardly does a week pass without an NPP big wig putting out statements that have the potential of breaching the peace that the country is currently enjoying.

The MP said Ghanaians detest and will resist any government that would want to suppress the will of the people.

Hon. Adu Asare expressed the concern during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo program on Monday 28th Nov. 2011, after Samuel Abu Jinapor, a special aide to the NPP flag bearer Nana Akufo Addo stated that the NDC is the most weakest government ever in the political history of Ghana.

According to him, President Mills led administration has not been able to carry out any of the numerous threats it issued against the NPP when it assumed power such as the jailing of NPP appointees.

However, Hon. Adu –Asare quickly rebutted the statement saying Ghanaians are not interested in an oppressive leader, adding that the quality of leadership style offered Ghanaians by Professor Mills is one that will ensure freedom for all citizens and also engender development.

He noted that the NPP has set off on a path of self destruction as its leaders, one after the other including the Presidential candidate, National Chairman among others have gained notoriety for making statement like “All die be die’’ , “Ghana will be like Rwanda or Afghanistan” to show their bravado.

“I don’t know what is wrong with the leadership of the NPP, they have great leaders including President Kufour who we never heard making such unfortunate statements, what has now come over the present leaders,? The Gadaffi style of leadership where a President is had on his people and talks tough is not needed in Ghana, we need leaders who respect their people like President Mills’’ he said.

Hon. Adu- Asare noted that with this kind of rubble rousing attitude by the NPP, they are certainly going to lose the 2012 elections.
