Rearrest and prosecute Delta Force hoodlums- Minority charges

The Minority in Parliament is demanding that the freed hooligans and members of the Delta Force must be rearrested and prosecuted with immediate effect.

Addressing a hurriedly organised press conference, the leader of the Minority, Haruna Iddrisu says the decision by the prosecution to enter a nolle prosequi in the infamous Delta Force court invasion scandal is bias, and capricious.

He does not understand how the Attorney General will claim to have no evidence of how the suspects in the scandal invaded the court and freed suspects who were standing trial before the court when indeed facebook and twitter are littered with videos and pictures of the unfortunate attack.

He said justice must be done and it must be seen to be done, failing which the independence of the judiciary will be grossly undermined.

The press conference is in reaction to a shocking decision by a Circuit Court in Kumasi to discharge eight suspects and members of the NPP vigilante group Delta Force for lack of evidence.

The eight, last month besieged the courts with chants, insults, disrupted the court process and freed their colleagues who were standing trial for attacking the Ashanti Region security coordinator.

Videos of the vigilante group invading the court went viral, with the Ghana Bar Association, Christian Council and other identifiable groups all condemning the incident.

In the face of the criticisms, the IGP, Asante Appeatu, Interior Minister Ambrose Dery and the president Nana Akufo-Addo all promised to ensure that culprits are dealt with under the law.

True to their assurances, the 13 suspects who escaped from the court voluntarily returned to police custody. They were later fined Ȼ2,400.00 for breaking custody.

In addition, eight of the suspects who were said to have masterminded the attack on the court were also arrested with the promise to prosecute them.

Barely a month after the arrest, the eight suspects were on Wednesday discharged by the Circuit Court in a ruling that has shocked many Ghanaians and angered the minority in particular.

The eight are Abass Caesar, Ebenezer Opoku, Samuel Yeboah, Kofi Fosu, Christian Anokye. The others are Kwame Frempong, Eric Kusi and Abdul Suleman Odudu.

At a press conference the Minority Leader said the decision is evidence of a government pandering to partisan pressure at the cost of justice delivery and respect for the rule of law.

This can undermine the independence of the judiciary,” he said adding the decision by the court is in violation of Article 296 (a) and (b) of the constitution, both of which talks about the exercise of discretionary powers

Reminding the president of his commitment to the rule of law, a commitment he reiterated during his state of the nation address, Haruna Iddrisu said the president must demonstrate leadership and uphold the rule of law.

Rights of Judge

He said the judge, Mary Sankyire who was insulted and intimidated by the “hoodlums” has every right to work in a free independent environment without any form of intimidation.

He said the actions by the culprits are condemnable and qualify for criminal contempt.

Mahama must be given 36 lashes to sit up – Ken Agyapong

Outspoken NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North in the Central Region, Kennedy Agyapong says President John Mahama has failed to meet all the targets set for him by Ghanaians, his employers.

According to him, the dwindling economy, the never-ending power and water crisis, labour agitations are all attestations that the President is a “failure”.

Kennedy Agyapong was speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday.

He added that such “gargantuan failure” on the part of the Mahama-Amissah-Arthur administration, gives credence to suggestions that politicians are corrupt.

The NPP MP said it is now an established fact that politicians in the country only “fight” for power just to loot and share monies with their cronies to the detriment of Ghanaians.

“Politicians just like the police are killing this country. We are really corrupt,” he stressed.

The Assin North MP noted that the only way to keep politicians on their toes is for God to give “all of us severe lashes”.

“I wish God invites all politicians, first person President Mahama and give him 36 lashes, the next his vice [Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur] 30 lashes, Ministers 24 and MPs 18 lashes to keep us on our toes”.

The NPP MP says he feels very guilty considering how politicians have contributed to Ghana’s under-development.

He stated that not everyone can become a good leader but “if you find yourself in a leadership position, you must ensure everyone is satisfied”.

Kennedy Agyapong said until Ghanaians put pressure on government to do the right things, they will continue to live in abject poverty.

Calls for electoral reforms defeat Supreme Court verdict – Major Oduro

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Nkoranza North, Major Derek Oduro (rtd) says calls for electoral reforms defeats the Supreme Court’s ruling on the dismissed presidential election petition.

He said the majority decision of the court which affirmed John Mahama’s presidency shows that the 2012 elections were free and fair.

Major Derek Oduro was speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday.

The Electoral Commission (EC), in a letter dated September 5, 2013, requested political parties to submit proposals for electoral reforms by the end of November, 2013.

This according to the Commission is in response to calls made by civil society groups both home and abroad after the eight months hearing of the election petition.

Even though some political parties have expressed their readiness to dialogue with the EC, the NPP is suspicious of the call.

It fears nothing substantial will be done by the Commission after receiving the proposals, a position Major Derek Oduro reiterated on Ekosii Sen.

According to him, the incessant calls for reforms cast a slur on the credibility and integrity of the judges who heard the case.

The Nkoranza North MP said per the Supreme Court’s decision, nothing went wrong in the 2012 elections and thus calls for reforms is “unnecessary”.

The NPP MP maintained that the status quo in the electoral process should remain the same for the 2016 general elections, “since we now know that elections are won at the polling stations”.

Major Derek Oduro said he will vote for reforms if the EC admits that the 2012 elections were flawed.

Address the plight of our veteran soldiers – MPs to govt

Ranking Member for the Committee on Defense and Interior, Major (Rtd) Derick Oduro, is calling on the government to critically examine the plight of the country’s fallen heroes and ensure that they earn a better living before they pass away.

“Our soldiers who sacrificed their lives are still perishing in their cubicles throughout the whole nation. Some are in the villages and towns and nobody cares for them. It is about time government makes effort to ensure that those who made these sacrifices reap the benefits of their sacrifices before they go to their graves,” he noted.

Mr. Oduro who is also the MP for Nkoransa North made this observation Wednesday when contributing to a statement made by the Chairman of the Committee on Defense and Interior, Fritz Baffour, on the floor of Parliament on the commemoration of the Remembrance Day.

Remembrance Day which is sometimes referred to as Poppy Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of the World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty.

The Nkoransa North law maker’s comments was reechoed by the the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu when commenting on the Day.

In his view, it was about time the country goes beyond ceremonial statements and strategise in making life better for the soldiers who put their lives on line while contributing towards global peace.

“What is the plight of the veteran soldier in Ghana today? It is one of a sorry state. Many of them are struggling to make a living, many of them are not assured of income retirement security and may of them are struggling to find decent accommodation having toiled and sacrificed with their lives in contributing to a peaceful gobal world.”

“The Ministers for Defense and the Interior must be working out some strategy in order to let the fallen heroes feel proud beore their death. It is often said in Ghana that we hail the dead more than the living and I think that we need a sharp departure from that statement,” he posited.

NPP needs surgical operation to survive – Ken Agyapong

If there is any political party out there that urgently needs a surgical operation to survive, then the attention must be on the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Cntral, has revealed the NPP is sick and calling on Nana Akufo-Addo to lead the party makes their condition even worse.

The NPP firebrand in an interview with OKAY FM disclosed that there is a huge gap that needs to be bridged within the party before making incessant calls on Nana Akufo-Addo to lead the party in 2016.

Over the past weeks, news about who leads the NPP in 2016 has been rejuvenated. Certain key players in the party have called on their 2012 presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo to re assume his post though he personally stated after the Supreme Court verdict that he would like to take a back seat and reflect on his political life.

Despite this statement by their 2012 flagbearer, many are those who have turned a deaf ear on the call and still persisting he becomes the 2016 flagbearer.

But Hon. Kennedy Agyapong believes the campaign to get Nana Akufo- Addo back this early is “disgusting”.

He explains there is an imperative issue that needs to be solved before jumping the gun to select a leader for 2016.

“The issue of faction is killing the NPP, he says. Before that problem is solved, there is no way the party can make progress,” Mr. Agyapong noted.

“If you are to hear people in Nana’s camp talk about Mr. Alan Kyerematen, you would have pity on the latter and this is also the same when you hear Alan’s camp talk about Nana Addo,” he said.

He warned that until the petty scramble for power is halted and the sabotage killed, they would make no remarkable progress in future elections.
