The Member of Parliament for Agona West, Charles Obeng-Inkoom has supported Old Zongo with bags of cement, jerseys and footballs.

He provided fifty (50) bags of cement to the community towards completion of classroom block projet started by the community but stalled due to lack of funds. In addition to the cement, the MP provided two football clubs in the area with sets of jerseys and footballs to help the youth in their sports development efforts.

Mr. Obeng-Inkoom assured the people of his commitment to helping the various communities to overcome their challenges and called for patience as he tries to address those challenges. He also called for their support in dealing with the problems confronting them.

The MP commended the community for the self help spirit that informed their decision to put up the classroom block and urged them to put the cements to good use in order to successfully complete the project. He also reminded them of the need to move beyond just providing the structure to ensure their children go to school. This, he noted can only be achieved if parents play their supervisory roles effectively to make sure their wards abstain from social vices like pre-marital sex, smoking, drug use among others.

If NDC is incompetent; then NPP was worse than useless – Ablakwa

Deputy Minister of Education, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has issued a stern warning to critics seeking to make political capital out of the country’s present economic situation vis-à-vis the cedi depreciation.

According to him, the cedi depreciation is not as a result of poor management of the economy by the Mahama administration but a global trend that has caught up with the country, stemming from previous actions by successive governments.

Hon. Okudzeto, who particularly picked on the former Deputy Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Nana Akomea, wondered why he (Nana Akomea) and other cronies in the NPP would slam the incumbent government over the fall of the cedi as against major foreign trading currencies.

The former NPP Parliamentarian posited that the current leaders at the helm of affairs lacked the innovation to “resurrect” the “dead” currency, on Asempa FM\’s “Ekosii Sen programme” on Monday.

“The quality of economic management is the biggest factor for the cedi depreciation. In five years, the cedi has depreciated more than 100 percent,” Akomea bemoaned.

But addressing the issue on Radio Gold during a panel discussion programme Alhaji and Alhaji, Okudzeto Ablakwa argued that during the reign of the NPP, the cedi fell by about 30 percent as against what he claims is 7 percent in the fall of the cedi under the Mahama government.

He thus questioned the logic in Nana Akomea’s assertions that “mismanagement and incompetence of Ghana’s economy by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is to be blamed for the free fall of the cedi.”

The NDC MP for North Tongu in the Volta Region further stated that per the reasoning of the former NPP Director of Communications, “if we (Mahama government) have 7 percent and we’re so incompetent. And we’re so useless, then you who have 30% in your record; who are you? You must be worse than incompetent. You must be worse than useless.

“There’s been a lot of cheap opportunism where politicians this week have tried to cash in. Everybody is really taking a dive to see how they can gain some political mileage out of this situation. And I think that we ought to quickly disregard that and discard it totally,” Okudzeto Ablakwa added.

Speaker sets up c’mttee to investigate Adjei Kojo demolishing

Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho has set up a committee to investigate issues surrounding the demolishing of houses and structures at Adjei Kojo by the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) a fortnight ago.

The team made up of the Works and Housing Committee, Chairman and Ranking Member of the Constitutional and Legal Committee, Land and Forestry Committee and former Ministers of Works and Housing have a month to report its findings to Parliament for the necessary action to be taken.

Rt. Hon. Speaker’s directive follows the Member of Parliament for Tema West, Irene Naa Torshie Addo delivering a statement in which she condemned the demolishing on the floor of the House on Thursday.

The exercise was undertaken with over 200 police and military men who pushed residents who were regarded as squatters and armed robbers out of their homes.

The MP stated that the mode of demolishing of the over 500 houses by the TDC where the affected residents were not even allowed to take away their personal effects could be described as inhuman and irresponsible.

Hon. Naa Toshie Addo added that the effect of the demolition exercise at Adjei Kojo cannot be quantified financially because it did not only displace people by making them look like refugees in their own country but it has shattered the dreams and aspirations of their children.

According to her the rationalisation for the use of force on the pretext that some of the residents were armed robbers is simply unfortunate and unacceptable because the 2000 residents of Adjei Kojo whose houses were demolished cannot be armed robbers.

“Children and adults now sleep in the open due to limited tents which makes them vulnerable to the bites of mosquitoes, snakes, and other insects,” she said.

Speaker orders IGP to investigate Kenyasi police brutalities

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho has issued an ultimatum to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the issue surrounding the alleged brutalities of some demonstrating residents of Kenyasi in the Ashanti region by the police.

The IGP has two weeks to thoroughly investigate the issue and report his findings to Parliament for the necessary action to be taken on the matter.

The Speaker’s directive follows a statement made on the floor of Parliament on Friday by the Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, Hon. Kofi Frimpong whose constituency covers Kenyasi.

In his statement the MP condemned the highhandedness of the police in engaging the residents who were lawfully demonstrating against the poor nature of their roads.

He claimed that the police were guiding the demonstrators peacefully until they had re-enforcement from the Buffalo unit when they started firing indiscriminately resulting in several persons being injured.

Hon. Kofi Frimpong stated that the police who were burnt on teaching the demonstrators a lesson even attacked a cluster of schools where some of the demonstrators had gone to seek refuge.

“After the police attacked the school, that action impacted negatively on the pupils, as psychologically some of them were traumatized and as a result only 40% of the pupils have returned to the classroom days after the event’’ he said.

Hon. Frimpong stated that while the police should be commended for reducing the crime rate in the country in recent times, the perpetrators of the brutalities must not escape punishment, and further called on the IGP to act on the matter with alacrity since the people of Kenyasi deserve justice.
