We might go on naked demo against Mahama – Oforikrom MP

Oforikrom Member of Parliament, Elizabeth Agyemang, says she will lead female supporters of the main opposition New Patriotic Party, NPP, in the Ashanti region on a naked demonstration in the coming days if the Government fails to address their grievances.

“We are waiting for a while; if we don’t see anything, the women in the Ashanti region, maybe we’ll naked ourselves and walk about the streets for the government to come and clothe us,” Elizabeth Agyemang threatened in an interview with XYZ News on the sidelines of the party’s “ya y3 den” demonstration in the Ashanti region.

“Sometimes you have to do something to achieve what you want,” she added. The wife and mother said she will ask permission from her husband if need be before leading such a demonstration.

More than 3,000 supporters of the party poured out on the streets on Monday June 10 to demonstrate against the Government over “erratic power supply” to the region.

Led by the party’s Ashanti Parliamentary caucus, the demonstrators accused the Mahama administration of mischievously depriving the opposition stronghold of regular power supply as punishment for not supporting the governing party.

They also demanded that the government fix their roads and also stop implementing the capitation system of the national health insurance scheme.

Parliament summons Afari-Gyan over limited voter registration

The Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, has been summoned to appear before Parliament to brief the House on initiatives being undertaken by the commission to deepen public confidence in Ghana’s electoral process.

He is expected to meet Members of Parliament (MPs) on Wednesday.

The announcement by the EC to open the register has generated much debate.

Some political parties have argued that the voters register has not been cleaned since the 2012 elections and so adding more names would bloat it.

In their view, the EC must first rid the register of ghost names and the names of deceased people.

Other issues relating to the electoral process are expected to come up for discussion at the meeting between Parliament and Dr Afari-Gyan.

Alan must step down for Nana Addo. – Akim Swedru MP

Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko has counseled New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flag bearer hopeful Alan Kyeremanteng to abandon his ambition of contesting the Presidential candidate race of the party and allow two time candidate Nana Akufo Addo to annex the position once again.

According to him, Alan who is believed to be the candidate to give Nana Addo a run for his money and second in line to succeed Nana Addo, will do himself and his political career a lot of good as that act of magnanimity would enhance his chances of winning once Nana Addo leaves the political scene.

The MP’s comment comes in the wake of some flag bearer aspirants in the NPP such as Nana Akufo Addo, MP for Mampong Hon. Francis Addai Nimoh, former Information Minister, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, MP for Asuogyaman, Hon. Osei Ameyaw and forme minister for Trade and Industry Hon. Dr K.K Apraku have all picked their nomination forms to ready themselves for the upcoming contest leaving Hon. Alan Kyeremanteng who is sure to pick his.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekoo sii sen show on Thursday, Hon. Kennedy Osei Nyarko urged Alan Kyeremanteng to stand firm and not allow himself to be pushed into taking certain decision that may be detrimental to his political career.

He charged the national executives of the party to exert pressure on some of the aspirants to step down and avoid the party having to spend resources to conduct a special mini congress to prune the number down to about three people.

“We shouldn’t pride ourselves as democrats and allow the party to suffer, if this executive board is able to dialogue and lessen the number of candidates that will be a solution to an avoidable problem that the party may face in the near future” he said.

The party expanded its electoral college after 17 personalities paraded themselves for election at the party’s presidential primary in 2007.

The sheer number was condemned by many but the party subsequently amended its constitution limiting the number of persons allowed to contest under the system to five.

However, when more than five people expressed interest to lead the party, a special electoral college ought to be organized, by secret balloting, to whittle the number down to five.

The special congress has to be done before a date could be fixed for the expanded college, which should all be done 24 months before the national elections.

Resettle Wiaboman displaced residents -Weija/Gbawe MP

Madam Rosemond Abrah, Member of Parliament for Weija/Gbawe in Accra, has appealed to Government to as a matter of urgency raise tents at safer spots in Dansoman for displaced residents of Wiaboman.

She also suggested that the Government should consider settling the people of Wiaboman elsewhere in future.

Madam Abrah made the appeal in a statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday.

“The heavy rains which submerged over 400 houses in Wiaboman is so life threatening.

“I am appealing to Government to immediately raise tents at safer spots in Dansoman for the displaced residents of Wiaboman and maybe in the near future, the Government should consider resettling the people of Wiaboman elsewhere,” Madam Abrah said.

Giving a background of the community, the MP said Wiaboman is an outlying community behind the Panbros Salt Industry in the Weija/ Gbawe constituency, and shares boundary on the coast with Glefe, an adjoining community in Dansoman.

It is usually affected with any onset of heavy rains, the MP noted, and requested to know the outcome of a report of the flooding situation, due to the wrong sitting of a Total Filling Station at Mallam Junction.

Madam Abrah noted that recent developments by Chinese companies and others who put up industrial and commercial buildings at the swampy areas of Mallam Junction by filling their sites with sand, had aggravated the matter.

On the proposed solutions in the reports, she asked: “Has the redesigning of the horizontal alignment of the drainage system at Mallam Junction been done?

“There was a proposal to fix six bigger culverts upstream, that a big underground drain would be constructed across the Total Fuel Station;

“Mr Speaker, what had been the outcome of this report since November 2010?” Madam Abrah asked.

She noted that the flooding at GICEL is equally devastating; adding that, the area needs bigger culverts and storm drains to convey the heavy rain waters from Bortianor, a suburb in the area.

“The action is urgent and now,” Madam Abrah said, adding “River Korkordjor needs to be dredged immediately.”

Nabdam MP commits funds to support key projects

The Member of Parliament for the Nabdam constituency, Boniface Agambilla has donated at least 100 bags of cement towards a constructional project being undertaken to reshape and put up the Sakoti ceremonial grounds in the Nabdam district.

The 100 bags of cement was purposely donated to support the Paramount Chief and the people of Sakoti Traditional area to facilitate the construction of pavements at the ceremonial grounds in honour of this years’ celebration of Tenglegre annual festival.

Interacting with Ghanamps.gov.gh, the MP noted that the festival which comes off November, each year was a major programme set to always bring together people from the area in celebration, and therefore required special preparations to make it a colourful and grand programme.

He claimed works on that project has been started and progressing steadily at Sakoti.

Meanwhile, the Nabdam legislator has also advanced a sum of GHS 30,000 from his share of the Common Fund for the 1st and 2nd quarters for 2013 to support the construction of the Logre dam.

The project is a World Bank Labour Intensive Social Intervention, designed to benefit the economic lives of locals in the area.

The World Bank funded programme engages the people of the area, especially the youth specifically in labour so that they could get paid to improve their lots.

According to the MP, the money injected into the project is meant to cater for the payment of labour, because of the delay in funding by the World Bank, but was quick to add that he would later be reimbursed when the Bank finally releases monies.
