Teye Nyaunu considering to go independent

The Outspoken NDC Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo Constituency, who was defeated in the just ended NDC parliamentary primaries, says he is considering contesting the December 2012 election as an independent candidate.

According to him, he though he is not bitter by the result, he is convinced his chances of retaining his position was narrowed due to the unlevel playing field by the government that characterized the contest.

He lost to the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi by 211 to 185 votes.

The MP is noted for his harsh criticism in public of his own party leader President John Evans Attah Mills   which some party supporters consider as an affront to the President. His defeat is considered by some political watchers as a way of punishing him for his unsavory remarks about the President.

Speaking on Peace FM on Monday 23rd January, Hon. Michael Teye Nyaunu who is also Deputy Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament in Nigeria accused the government of being behind his loss.

He said government connivance was visibly clear as state machinery visited his constituency to support his competitor and shared all sorts of items including cooking oil, roofing sheets and monies to influence some of the delegates to reject him.

Hon. Michael Teye Nyaunu added that he is yet to take a definite decision on whether or not he is going to contest the upcoming elections, but was quick to add that even if he decides to go independent he will still belong to the NDC party which he has always supported and fought for.

I wil never endorse Bawumia – P.C Appiah Ofori

The uncompromising New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Asikuma Odoben Brakwa in the Central Region, Paul Collins Appiah Ofori says endorsing the candidature of Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia as the party’s running mate for the 2012 presidential election is the last thing he will ever do.

He said Dr. Bawumia is not an electoral asset whose political strength can increase the votes of the NPP in the 2012 elections which will be keenly contested.

The controversial MP maintained that Dr. Bawumia did not garner enough votes in his constituency when he was earlier made the running mate and this attest to the fact that he cannot win more votes in the Zongos which is a crucial area for the NPP.

Hon. P.C Appiah Ofori was reacting to an earlier publication in the media that he had endorsed Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Wednesday, Mr. Appiah Ofori stated that any NPP member who is aware of the historical facts of the party will not back Dr. Bawumia because of the past conduct of Dr. Bawumia’s late father Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia.

He maintained that Dr. Bawumia’s father, who was a Minister in the Convention People’s Party (CPP) under Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, caused the detention of Mr. R.R Amponsah, a founding father of the UP tradition which is an antecedent of the NPP.

P.C. Appiah Ofori emphasized that with this historical truth, Dr Bawumia who is the son of such an ‘enemy’ must not be permitted to occupy the second highest office of the NPP.

He was all for Lepowura Alhaji Mohammed Nurideen Jamwula who he thinks is politically formidable and will draw lots of votes in the various zongos as he has a base there.

My desire is to serve constituents -John Tia

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Talensi Constituency, Mr. John Akologu Tia, has attributed his attempt to represent his people for the sixth time to the various calls by the constituents on him to continue the excellent work he has done over the years as their representative.

Mr. Tia, who is also the Minister of Information, said the people he represented considered his achievements in the area of education, health, road construction, peace, energy, agriculture, social services and personal support to the people as laurels that necessitated his re-election as the area’s parliamentary candidate and subsequently MP, come December 2012.

Mr. Tia said this when he spoke to the Daily Graphic to discount claims that his constituents had benefited little from his five terms in office as their representative.

He said his continuous humility and policy of non-interference in the chieftaincy and other communal and traditional matters within the constituency had endeared him to his people and also fostered unity among the people.

Since his election to Parliament, Mr. Tia has risen through being a back bencher in Parliament to the Deputy Minority Whip from 2001 to 2004; the Minority Whip from 2005 to 2008; Deputy Majority from 2009 to 2010 and then the Minister of Information.

“My human relations with the people have been such that it is not only NDC faithful who enjoy my social life, but all people across the political divide,” he said, adding that such credentials had endeared him to the entire electorate in Talensi.

Expatiating on education, he said there was no single community within the constituency that had no school. “I have always preached education, education and education, and my first intervention in 1994 when I entered parliament was the assistance I sought from USAID to establish a school at Nungu, a fishing community; the first of its kind”.

The Information Minister, who is a journalist by profession, said he personally paid the salaries of teachers who taught at the school for the first five years before the Ghana Education Service took over.

He indicated that enrolment into the school had been increasing by leaps and bounds, resulting in the need to expand it.

He also mentioned his personal assistance in the form of paying school fees for hundreds of students who gained admission to both secondary and tertiary institutions.

On health, Mr. Tia said before he went to parliament, there was only one health centre in Tongo, the constituency capital, making it difficult for the people to access health services. “They (the constituents) only enjoyed health care when health personnel organized medical outreach in the area but today, I can boast of 12 health facilities within the constituency,” facilities, Mr. Tia said, had been constructed through his efforts as an MP.

He also mentioned his major role in ensuring that communities within the area were connected to the national grid.

“About 85 per cent of the constituency has been connected to the national grid and this greatly helps students to study and has also enabled people to establish their small businesses. That has really brought tremendous positive impact on education and health,” he emphasised.

Mr. Tia noted that apart from supporting small farmer groups, he had also facilitated the building and repairing of dams for various communities, some of which are Duusi, Geri, Tongo-Beo, Duulugu, Zong, Pusu-Namango and the re-dredging of the Winkogo and Balungu dams, as well as the provision of tractor services for the people.

He mentioned some of the roads that he helped to construct as the Zuarungu-Kpatia-Gbea-Tindongo road, Sheaga-Duusi-Pelungu road, Tonogo-Yameriga-Duusi road, Sheaga-Datuku road, Tongo-Tenzuk road which was tarred, and the Sheaga-Nungu road which is currently under construction.

Hon. Nii Nortey Dua, urged his supporters and delegates to go out and vote convincingly for him to make his dream of bringing development to the area and also improving the living conditions of the constituents a reality.

Reshuffle lacks excitement – Nana Akomea

NPP’s Communication Director, Nana Akomea, says President Mills’ latest reshuffle will add nothing new to the government.

President John Mills in his latest reshuffle has brought on board Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma South, Fritz Baffoe, and the MP for Nabdam, Moses Asaga.

Fritz Baffoe will be heading the Information Ministry while Moses Asaga takes oversight responsibility at the Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare.

To many political pundits, the president’s latest reshuffle is important, going into an election year.

However, to Nana Akomea, “nothing is exciting about the reshuffle”.

To him, the resignation of former Education Minister, Betty Mould-Iddrisu is more dramatic and should generate the needed questions; not a reshuffle.

The NPP had called on the then Education Minister who was serving as Ghana’s Attorney General when the judgment debt were paid; to resign but, Nana Akomea said though she has resigned, questions still remain as to the main reason why she did.

“We don’t know if she resigned because of our call; that is, if she has resigned because of the role she played in the loss of 928 billion cedis to the state; or she resigned on health grounds; or she resigned because she didn’t like her job as a minister”, he told Xfm 95.1 in an interview, adding, “we hear she has been appointed as a high commissioner to South Africa which is very strange; for a senior cabinet minister to be appointed as a high commissioner; which is lower than a deputy minister. So it’s all very strange; we need to be told why”.

“Because the matter involves corruption and the massive loss of gargantuan fund, we need to know the reason why she has resigned. Anything short of that, the case will still not be closed”, he said.

A statement which indicated President John Mills’ acceptance of Betty Mould-Iddrisu’s resignation stated that she did not want to be a hindrance to the president’s Better Ghana agenda. But Nana Akomea is not convinced.

He asked, “why will she be a hindrance to the better Ghana agenda? Is it because of some gargantuan mistake that she has done? We just need to be told. In what way has she been a hindrance to the Better Ghana agenda? When we have the reasons, then we can interrogate the matters. And the people of this country deserve answers to how come this government paid up 928 billion cedis to an NDC financier when we have so many basic everyday needs of the people that are not satisfied”.
