Kade MP provides job opportunity to some youth

As youth unemployment remain teething problem to government as a result of high number of graduates that are churned out each year from the various educational institutions, alternative measures are being adopted to mitigate the situation.

While it is becoming increasingly difficult for most graduates to get employment at the formal sector, the informal sector on the other hand appears to offer some windows of opportunity and is worth taking advantage of.

In view of this, the Member of Parliament Asamoah Ofosu, has taken advantage of some of these opportunities in the informal sector to assist the youth in his constituency to earn livelihoods.

One of the measures was the provision of taxis for some youth who are qualified drivers on work and pay terms for two years at reasonable prices. Already, three people have benefited from the initiative and he hopes to extend it benefit more people who might show interest.

Mr. Ofosu also supported about 10 second hand cloth dealers from his constituency whose wears were burnt in the inferno at the Katamanto Market in Accra with capital. He noted that these people must be supported to get back on their feet with their business to be able to support their families.

Bia West MP donates 40 sets of streetlight to hosp

Member of Parliament for Bia West Michael Coffie Boampong has donated 40 sets of streetlight to the Essam Government in his constituency.

According to him, his kind gesture is to ensure that the health facility is well illuminated during the night and also boost security at the place.

Speaking to Ghanamps.gov.gh, Hon. Coffie Boampong stated that the provision of the streetlight would discourage miscreants from hiding under the cover of darkness to engage in criminal activities.

He noted that he secured the lights with support from government at a cost of 12,800, adding that he remains committed to ensuring an improvement of quality education in the area.

Ghana risk electing drug baron as President – Tetteh Chaie

Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie has said Ghana risk electing a drug baron as President if the menace of drug trafficking is not effectively tackled.

According to him, drug traffickers have infiltrated all spheres of society and professions and that it would not be far fetched if one should make such conclusions.

The MP was commenting on Asempa Fm’s Eko sii sen show on Wednesday over the arrest of the former Airport Security chief, Solomon Adelaquaye for drug trafficking in the United States of America.

He is also the Chief Executive Officer of Sohin Security, the company contracted to ensure security at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

Hon. Tetteh Chaie lauded the collaborative efforts of the security agencies that resulted in this arrest. He stated that the issue of drug trafficking was very serious and must be tackled as a national concern and not politicized.

The MP commended government for its continues commitment to fighting the drug menace and also cancelling the contract with the said security company.

Government cannot rule out arson – Murtala

Mr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, has stated that much as government cannot confirm that all the fire outbreaks witnessed in certain parts of the country recently have been orchestrated, it is also possible that such a probability could not be ruled out.

“Government has set up an investigation team to find out the causes of those fire outbreaks, particularly in our major markets, and we do not want to base our arguments on mere conjecture,” he added.

Mr Mohammed who gave the explanation during the daily media briefings at Flagstaff House on Wednesday, added that apart from the investigations, government had also issued out other measures that would help curb the fire outbreaks.

About eight fire outbreaks have been recorded in Accra and Kumasi this year alone, destroying goods running into several millions of Ghana Cedis.

The Deputy Minister mentioned the closure of markets at 6pm, banning of cooking in the markets and the stepping up of surveillance as some of the interim measures government had adopted to avoid the recurrence of fire outbreaks.

He explained that the long term measures would include proper layouts and wiring in the markets, proper passages and the strengthening of security in all the major markets of the country.

Mr Mohammed who conveyed government’s sympathy to victims of the Tuesday Makola fire, advised all traders in the major markets of the country to apply for insurance policies that would assist them to recover some loses in such accidental circumstances.

He announced that President John Dramani Mahama who was on a three-nation visit to Ethiopia, France and Japan would be arriving on Wednesday evening, adding that the trip had been beneficial as Ghana would be gaining financially to develop her infrastructure.

The Deputy Minister said some of the negotiations had yielded some financial dividends that would be used for the rehabilitation of bridges, especially the Adomi Bridge, which had encountered some challenges over the years.

Parliament Select Committee on Energy to scrutinize proposal for tariff adjustments

Utility providers including the Volta River Authority, Electricity Company of Ghana, the Ghana Grid Company as well as the Bulk Storage and Transportation Company will Thursday morning justify their demands for an upward tariff adjustment at a meeting with the parliamentary select committee on energy and mines.

This is part of stakeholder consultation being undertaken by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission on demands for tariff adjustment by the service providers.

Dr. Kwabena Donkor who chairs the committee, told Joy News that since parliament represents the populace, they have the responsibility to safeguard the interest of the consuming public.

He noted that though the utility providers may have a cause to demand increases in tariffs, the public also “has the right to demand and access quality services.”

“It is time as a people that we look at our energy consumption…” he added.

Meanwhile the Public Utility Regulatory Committee (PURC) has asked to be allowed space as an independent and legally mandated body to undertake its responsibility.

This comes on the heels of raging public arguments and submissions regarding tariff adjustments for electricity generation, distribution, and water service providers.

Officials of the Commission say this would ensure transparency, equity and fairness in the regulatory process.

Tatale neglected in development-Tatale/Sanguli MP

The Member of Parliament for Tatale/Sanguli ,James Cecil Yanwube is craving for some support from government to improve the trend of development at Tatale .

According to him, the new district, Tatale/Sanguli carved out from the former Zabzugu/Tatale district in 2011 has seen no significant development especially, Tatale township which suffers most in this regard.

He said despite the population density and the commercial appeal of the area, Tatale lacks the required push from government to develop the area, as it had been neglected for a long period.

Highlighting this in a paper laid before parliament, Mr James Yanwube contended that Tatale which is even a border town, close to Togo has all its local service post such as CEPS, Immigration Service and the rest abandoned compared with the much developed Togolese counterpart service post.

He indicated that several requests to upgrade these service posts have fallen on deaf ears, and thereby has replicated in the other small towns that fall within the whole district.

He therefore reiterated that per the seeming neglect that has characterized the district all these years ever since its joint creation, it demands some attention to remedy the development deficits incurred over the period.

Lawra MP assures to collaborate with assembly in fixing roads

The Member of Parliament for Lawra, Mr Abu Samson has assured that he would collaborate with the assembly to reshape and fix those poor roads which remain unattended in the district.

He stressed that there were several stretches of road that needs urgent attention, because of its bad nature as some have been practically left eroded, bumpy and untarred.

Speaking in an interaction with Ghanamps.gov.gh, he said this situation undoubtedly affects smooth transportation, hence called on government through the Ministry of roads and Highways to assist enhance the roads which were in bad shape.

Some of the roads which were highlighted in this instance included Eremon-Toto, Tabier-Bagre, Tovure-Gbier and Brefo roads amongst others.

Kade MP donates towards rebuilding of Kade market

The Member of Parliament for Kade Asamoah Ofosu has assisted authorities towards the reconstruction of the Kade market.

The MP made donation of a number of packets of roofing sheets to aid early reconstruction of portions of the market that was recently razed down by fire.

This is in response to appeal by the traders for assistance to provide that conducive environment for them to get back to business which is their source of livelihood.

The onset of the rainy season is major concern of the traders whose sheds were affected by the fire as the absence of conducive space will expose them to the rain and even make-shift sheds may not be able to support them enough.

The Kade Market also suffered its share of fire outbreaks which have become a common spectacle in major market centres across the country destroying properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

Sekyere Afram Plains MP bemoans bad roads in the constituency

Sekyere Afram Plains Member of Parliament, Alex Adomako-Mensah has bemoaned the poor state of roads in the area.

He is worried about the ordeal residents in the area would be faced with moving from one community to the other now that the rainy season has started.

The MP noted that apart from Kumawu to Drobosu, the district capital which is accessible by road, all other communities are not accessible by cars except by motorbikes. He added that of all the five gates to the constituency it is only motorbikes that are used by the people for their day to day movement.

He however assured that Drobosu to Dawia road which was awarded on contract in 2010 but stalled would be completed by the end of the year since the contractor has returned to work and work is progressing well.

According to him, he has made the necessary contacts with government and the other appropriate agencies for more motorable roads to be constructed in the area and he is sure government will redeem its pledge to the constituency.

BIA EAST MP supports School with Building Materials

Member of Parliament for Bia East, Richard Acheampong has supported a Junior High School in his constituency with building materials.

He donated 10 bags of cement and 4 packets of roofing sheets to the Baamoa Junior High School to be used in rehabilitation of the school block.

Speaking to Ghanamps.gov.gh, Hon. Richard Acheampong stated that the block which has its roof ripped off is in a dilapidated state that serves as a death threat to the students who use the facility.

He bemoaned the current state of the school block which he contended was not conducive for effective learning and noted this could negatively affect the quality of education in the area.

Hon. pledged to do everything possible within his power to ensure that education in his constituency receive a major boost to enable children become competent professionals in the future.
